i haven't bought or been into Atari collecting for a while, and i always thought 4 switch wood-grain units were all made in Taiwan.
So, yesterday, i found a unit in a lot i bought that was 4-switch and made in Sunnyvale. whats up with this, this even exists?

There were some 4 switch models made in California but yes a great majority were made overseas around that time.

is it any more rare than the regular one? is it worth keeping around, or should i just get rid of it?

It's rarer, yes, but I don't think it really commands much more money. You may want to advertise it at Atariage and see if anyone makes you a legitimate offer on it worth taking. I could be wrong but don't get your hopes up.
