Does anyone have or played through the new Mortal Kombat? Looking to get some user feedback on here to justify going out and picking it up right now..thanks!

The game has a ton of goodies within it; story mode, challenge tower...it's all really cool. I think this is one of the best fighting games in terms of being able to play by yourself and have a really good experience.

As for the fighting itself? It's actually not that bad, but I personally don't find it to be anything to rave about. If you're like me and you play games like BlazBlue and Marvel vs Capcom 3 a lot, then you've gotta brace yourself for the change of pace you're in for. It's not the fastest game (not that I expected it to be, but I wish it was a teeny bit faster), and the combo system is the "Mortal Kombat" style to where you literally just have to put in the combo instead of timing it based on the frames you see. As for how this game stacks up competitively...not sure. I haven't tried it out online yet. Although there are way too many unblockables in this game for it to be good at a competitive level, but to each his own.

You can't look at MK from the perspective of really any other fighting game. MK is MK in how the combat works, how spacing and zoning and offensive pressure work, and so on. Mortal Kombat isn't just about the chain combos; launching into a combo with normals and specials is where the big damage has always come from. Watch some vids of good MK players running UMK3 or even this(already!) and you'll be hard pressed to think it ISN'T fast.

I've only played online and a little bit of story mode and arcade mode but from what I can tell the game is fantastic. The story mode is paced well and the cut scenes are surprisingly well done. The combat runs very smooth and much better than any MK that's been out since UMK3. I haven't gotten a chance to mess around in any of the other modes, but there is a ton of stuff in this. It seems well worth the $60 price tag.

*sigh* I wish I stressed the "Mortal Kombat" combo system a bit more in my post, meaning that I know this isn't some flashy 2D Capcom fighting game. In fact, I really should have put that it's the "MK style." When I put the game in, I definitely tried playing it like MKII, and it does have that feel to it with much more details. Trust me, I understand the difference between MK and other games fought on a 2D plane.

That being said...don't get me wrong. This isn't a slow game by any means. The issue I had when I first picked it up is that I used Sub-Zero without looking at the movelist at all. So you can probably guess that my gameplay equated to using Sub-Zero's freeze moves, and all I saw was him taking forever to do his damn ice puddle or me getting punched as I'm trying to do his classic freeze projectile O_O Earlier today I started messing around with their movelists, and this game is faster than I perceived it to be. But the point I was stressing was that there have been a lot of recently released fighting games that move remarkably fast, and if you're like me, you've become accustomed to fast paced gameplay, MK series or not. Now this doesn't make it a bad game, as SSFIV is slowed down fighting game but it's still great.

But yeah, the gameplay is also much better than I thought it originally was; I was wrong when I said this game wouldn't be great at a competitive level, as there's a lot of pretty cool mixups you can do in this game, and unblockables are avoidable. I love the X-Ray moves.

I guess that's just what happens when I use characters like Jade and Kitana, though ^_^ Found some characters who suit my style, and the game automatically gets better for me.

This is the first MK game I've played in a long time, and I am loving it.The presentation is the best I've seen in a fighting game since CvS1, and the gameplay is actually very good as well, it's no VF, but it's deep enough to play at higher levels.

Sub Zero's freeze attacks are complete garbage in this game unless used within a combo. They are painfully slow. Here's a cheap infinite though.

For sure. That's a neat video. I mean, I'm sure Sub-Zero is actually a pretty good character when you don't play him like a 10 year old who just learned his special moves XD

Edit: I'm currently playing through story mode, and I'm loving it so far. I'm going to attempt to do as much offline stuff as I can, then eventually I'll venture onto playing online to see how that is. I really like using Sonya because I succeed in fighting games with dive kicking blondes ^_^

I am enjoying the game although I'm learning Lui Kang and cant to a combo over 6 hits and I even have the guide (don't quite understand what there saying sometimes.) I think the game is pretty solid, the biggest problem I have is with the shitty xbox controller. Some moves are difficult with the joystick and the control is too touchy like when I push back and my character jumps. Also I think the cutscene graphics could have been way better, not quite sure whats up with that.

Thats what happened to me in the demo, I kept imputing Mileena's finishers and neither of them worked. Instead of a slice and dice I ended up just bitch slapping the dude. I need to brush up on my fatalities.

I just got this game last night. It's definitely the best MK in a long time. I'm just getting into it, but I find that the medium difficulty is too easy. I blew through seven matches with Mileena today without dying once. The moves are easy to execute and the controls are good, even with the crappy 360 dpad. I'm really satisfied with this one.

From what I've seen of it, it looks great. So is this game is a must-buy for MK fans? I'm looking at getting the Tournament Edition this weekend. The joystick looks great, but if I'm gonna spend that much I want the game to be as good as the Joystick. LOL

Medium isn't bad, one thing that I don't like is how the more you have to retry the easier it becomes. So getting to Shao Kaun on medium then losing 5 times, he gets too easy. Is it really beating the game on medium then? I don't know how I feel about that, although I don't understand how you supposed to hit Shao Kaun because he just walks through every punch unless hes taunting you.

I'm considering picking it up, but I dunno. I'm a BlazBlue/Guilty Gear guy, so the transition might be odd.

I used to be all about MK2/3 on the Genesis though, and I did enjoy the demo. I'll probably wind up getting it sometime.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I remember sitting there as a kid trying to beat Mortal Kombat II for a long time, trying to figure out Shao Kahn's patterns. Now the newer players won't have to go through those growing pains like I did XD

It Aughtta (sp) be for 250 bones. When I looked into them they are true HAPA arcade sticks and they can be worked on and parts ordered easily if they should frig up.

Very nice though.

I picked up Tournament Edition for $149.99. PDP sells the sticks on their site for about $130.

The better deal is getting the Tournament Edition. If not, Game=$60, the Stick alone=$130 which comes to $190.

And thanks! :) I also added you on my Xbox Live friends List.

Edit: Story Mode is awesome BTW!

Then I suppose you already answered my question of how responsive/comfortable it is. Responsiveness, comfortability and price are my three main factors when looking into purchasing arcade sticks. Unfortunatly this one fails hard when it comes to price.

I'm one of those heathen folk who prefer Japanese arcade parts to American, but I played with the MK stick tonight and its pretty good. One fifty gets you the stick and the game: can't beat that. It's cheaper than the other worthwhile sticks out there.

The only thing I don't like are the actual buttons themselves. If those are actual Happ buttons I'll eat my stylish hat. Way too stiff.

I get a 2d Tekken vibe from it. Punishing unsafe blocked moves with a whole bunch of Target combos. I haven't liked an MK game since 2, but I like this one.

Ugh, tell me about it. MvC3 online is rough. The other night I only fought only the #1 and #2 people on Xbox live. Although I managed wins off of each of them, I want to say I had a combined record of like 4-23 against them :( My ranked record is like 366-240 or something like that. It used to be better, but I'm still learning.

Anyway, for anyone sees this as I post this, they're streaming Mortal Kombat Wednesday Night Fights 3.3.

I'm almost done with story mode and a few fights have given me trouble mostly the tag team matches and/or fights with teleporting characters; even worse when both are teleporters. But I've always been weak agains teleport attacks in any game so that's just par for me.

For some reason the whole big Cyber Sub Zero tag match wasn't all that hard I died a few times but once I got the rhythm down and a bit o luck not too bad.

I've really enjoyed story mode quite a bit though and I hope that we see more of this kind of thing in future games and not nescessarially just with this series.

I loved Story Mode, definitely a huge plus in the game.

At the Power Up Stream this weekend, there was some incredibly high level Mortal Kombat being played. The winner of the tournament was playing a Sub-Zero that looked like it was incredibly annoying to play against.

Also, am I the only person that actually prefers using Cyber Sub-Zero over regular Sub-Zero? I love the fact that he can teleport and has a dive kick.

Overall is this worth picking up?

Last Mortal Kombat I bought and still regularly play is Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Overall I was satisfied with that one. Wasn't overly crazy about the 'story mode', mainly cause of the story itself. I do just like straight up fighting in it.

But I thought this one looked well done in commercials, but nobody I know actually has it. Thinking of grabbing it in the next few weeks.

IMO I would say yes. At the same time it's the first fighting game I played since ps2. Story mode is good all though farfetched but thats MK for ya. On top of story mode there is the traditional ladder mode, and 300 challenges, with a bunch of buyable unlockables if that your thing (a shit ton of artwork). Also the fighting is not too complicated. That's my 2 cents, the only thing I can't speak for is how it compares to modern fighters because I don't play them.

I gotta say, Quan-chi is getting a lot of hate as a playable character, but I absolutely love him. His moves are cheezy as hell, he says a bunch of random words that have no meaning in the english language but sound cool, he has a 'zombie' move, and to top it all of he can finish you by beating you to death with your own leg!

Seriously. Good stuff this game.

Edit: Anyone else find it kind of strange not to see (and hear) the Midway logo at the promp screen though? It just seems different to me. I mean I know they were sold out but I alway's remembered that from the past games.

It's really good. The story mode alone is six or seven hours, and even though the story is crazy go nutz, it's still a lot of fun. There are three hundred challenge rooms to go through, some of which are goofy and fun. Some are cheap as Hell, but you can pay the game's currency ("Koins") to skip them. Single player content alone might be worth it, and the fighting itself is excellent too. You should totally get it. Just stay away from King of the Hill or ranked matches for now. The netKode is garbage.

Sounds decent enough. Looks like it'll be another game in my collection, come next paycheck.

I've been a fan of the MK series for a long time, and while I haven't been able to pick this one up yet, I decided to watch the entire story mode.

Needless to say, my shit was flipped. Seriously, they give a new meaning to the term reboot here!

I really hope they fix the netcode soon. My friends and I were playing online, and while we had a couple decent matches (not great, but playable), the rest were just absolute garbage. I'd be pressing buttons and literally nothing was happening.

Gamespy, brother. It's a bad word to see on your TV if you want to play online.

Hopefully they'll get it together. The game is a lot of fun. It's actually making me want to go back and revisit MK II and UMK3.

Yeah for sure. They've addressed the issue though, so eventually it should be fixed.

This game really does have a lot of potential, there's a lot of fun stuff you can do in this game.

Forget MvC news this made my week/month
Final of the 4 DLC characters announced:http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/21/freddy-krueger-haunting-mortal-kombat-august-9/ (http://www.fridaythe13thfranchise.com/2011/07/freddy-not-jason-confirmed-for-mortal.html)
Heres to hoping a certain other icon makes it too.

Wow. Didnt see that coming! I figured it be like Cyber Smoke or someone from one of the newer MKs. Looking forward to August 9th now.

I wish the would've used the o.g. Freddy...and why does he have claws on both hands?

Yeah I dunno why he has two claws either. Here's to hoping original Freedy is an alt costume.

I'm still thinking that they will whip out Jason Vorhees on the second installment of downloadable players, after all there are still 4 empty slots next to cyber sub on the right hand side.

It would make for a kind of Scorpion/Sub Zero rivalry that would go over well with the fans.

I can't wait to tell you the truth, this is freakin great news. I thought having Rain back was epic, but this will be fun.

I know I've heard opinions eithe way as to whether Jason will be included at some point or not but; Since both Freddy and Jason are New Line Properties and I believe WB owns New Line I'd say that the licensing wouldn't be an issue.

*didn't read the rest of the topic*

I love this game. I certainly prefer it to Street Fighter 4, no question.
