ugh...I'm giving up on this game. I can't take it anymore. There's fun hard, there's challenging test yourself hard, and then there's I never want to play video games hard. This game stopped being fun long ago...and I just can't take it.

So yeah, you win game...you have beat me. I gave it my best, but in the end, you have defeated me. The nightmares and anger you caused me the last few weeks are over. I'm officially putting this game into my "I never want to hear/see/play you category". This game makes me sick.

Anyone want to share their horror stories with this game. Anyone actually manage to beat the game and extra levels? Cuz I never will.

I can do OK by trial and error with a real TV set. These kinds of games are even tougher in portable versions...

Which version are you playing?

Sorry, I'm not adding to the conversation, just being curious :D.

When I was young and hardcore (i.e. had a lot of extra time on my hands) I beat the game and the extra levels when it was released on the SNES. Now that I am older and more casual (i.e. less time for games like this) I don't have the patience for it.

I agree with theclaw, the Lost Levels is near impossible on a handheld and a sure fire way to a headache.

A friend and I beat it a few weeks ago in about 6 hours. The only level we really had problems on was World 4-4, it was the hardest castle for us to beat.

Some of the levels did take some trial and error before we passed them, but I didn't think it was too hard.

Also I was playing on the SNES.

I remember playing the Lost Levels(Super Mario Bros 2 JAP). That game would frustrate the hell out of me. I beat it once and that was it. Never really played it anymore after that.

I beat it on the All Stars collection on SNES and on the GBC Super Mario Bros Deluxe all the way through both times. It's hard, and it does take some memorization, but I don't look at it as being terribly frustrating. I actually consider it a rite of passage :P

I've beaten the game multiple times, including the extra levels, on Mario All Stars for SNES. For some strange reason I really enjoy SMB2J, it's difficult but not impossible. I haven't played through it in years, gonna have to do that whenever I have the spare time.

I'm playing the SNES version, which apparently is easier than the NES version I think. sigh I've NEVER given up on a game, everything game I start I finish, and I'm still reluctant to do it especially for a Mario game, but after about the 10,000 death, I'm starting to lose faith :(

I've yet to beat this game, but I've played through some of the higher levels. It seems to be alot harder if you try to play through slow. If you approach the game like a speed run challenge and just try to blaze through a stage non-stop, I find it to get a little easier. It just takes memorization and a heck of a lot of precision (and sometimes luck when facing Bowser: shooting fire, jumping, and throwing hammer crap while a rotating fireball thingie spins next to him).

Also, powerups are pretty much useless. In a couple castles with mushrooms, I found I was dying because of my height. What a bastard of a game, punishing you for trying to gain an advantage! LOL

I've been able to finish this game a few times too. It's pretty hard but not impossible it just takes patience. I really like this game though.

lots of vulgarities were spewn from that game.

I brought my copy over to a friends house back in the day, i'd usualy sleep over every weekend after school, one weekend we were working on 8-4 (ok I was, he was watching) and his older sister sat down and watched us for awhile, she had commented on how impossible the level seemed to be, she eventually left for work. shortly after we gave up and left to go do something else.

next weekend came around and I was once again there, and we started again to try to beat the level, and his sister happened to come back in the room and commented "seriously is that the same level?" yup!, she stayed for a bit and we finally (we again being me) were able to beat the level, she seemed even happier than we were that the level was finally under our belts. ended up beating the last 4 worlds with very little trouble, but god--damm that 8-4 was brutal.

This version is better than all the other repros out there, you can select a level at the start, and the wind actually blows like the FDS version, thought i wouldn't assume everone knew about this.

I beat the SNES version, well I mean I got past Level 9-4, a little while ago. Didn't really give me too much trouble. In fact, I ended up giving up while playing Super Mario Bros. 3 for it being too hard! I think the SNES verison is just a lot easier since you have unlimited continues from the start of each level instead of each world like the other games on All Stars.

I'm guessing this was not part of the original Famicom Disk System version though, which probably makes it a lot tougher.

I beat it many times all the way through, including all of the bonus levels, on All-Stars as a kid. In fact, while it was challenging for me, I never knew it had a reputation for being a ridiculously hard game. I wonder if the Lost Levels shaped me as a gamer because All-Stars was the very first game that I personally owned. I'm not even sure if I beat any games prior to the ones on All-Stars.

I've tried Lost Levels before on All-Stars, but it's a real pain in the ass, especially in the later levels. Props to whoever has managed to actually beat the game.

I had All-Stars since the late 90s, and didn't actually beat Lost Levels until I found the game again sometime in the 00s (in a box with one of my original, crumbling Snes pads - coincidence? :P)

Played the original on the VC recently and didn't make it past World 3. However, since I have learned the value of Nintendo hardware, nothing died.

Let me just put it this way.. my first experience with the game was in cartridge form. I didn't know at the time that it was a bootleg, but of course it was. Anyway, needless to say it didn't have any instructions, etc. and my information about the game was pretty much a big fat ZERO. Just imagine where you were in 1987/88 and what you honestly knew about SMB2 at that point in your life.. not very much right? Well same here, so everything was a surprise!.. the very first one being the poison mushroom (which I kept trying to "experiment" with since I couldn't accept it would be a bad object) and it all went downhill from there. LOL

Anyway I had no idea it was supposed to be a "difficult" SMB and I thought either I just sucked or something was just off about the game. I never ended up finishing it... not even when it came out on the SNES and you could actually save in some points. But whatever.. maybe someday I'll play it in an emulator with save states. As is, I still have the dreaded thing:

If I can find time to beat arcade Ghosts N Goblins, I've had time to beat SMB 2 Japan on SNES, and on SMB Deluxe GBC. I have the original Famicom version on my Wii VC and every now and again I try it out to get further in it, never do as my patience isn't what it once was. Of course in the past I've beaten it on PC the 8 required times needed to reach worlds A-D (which oddly enough SMB All Stars didn't reatin the original way, you just need to not warp and playthrough, not warp and play through 8 times on the original version), it just took patience and dedication over an 8 night span, though I stretched it into two weeks as I played something else to maintain my sanity, and to keep from getting bored with the game.

I don't mind the game at all, one day I'd like to repro it or get it on GBA with the Famicom Mini Series.

I actually play the NES repro of this all the time and I can say I mastered it. My version is just like the original FDS version, and has the wind sound effects and everything, no level select cheats. The only difference is that all of the spring boards are red, so the ones that do or don't bounce you up higher just have to be memorized. The feature that saves how many times you completed the game doesn't work because there is no battery in this cart. I got it from gamereproductions.com

So I actually had to leave the NES on and complete the game all the way through 8 times in a row to do the secret levels. I actually put myself through it and did it last year, recording the session on a VHS tape. Then the secret levels were tough, especially world D because I wasn't used to the new levels as much as I know the first 9 worlds.

It shows just how hardcore the Japanese are with video games if they get 'the Lost Levels' and we get running around tossing turnips for Mario 2. Credit to the nation of Japan, their video gaming borders upon sadism. LOL

Like NE146, I still have my original Famicom cart of this game. Mine has a different sticker as well, and white casing. I bought it and Super Mario Bros 3 at the same time. I had SMB3 close to Japanese release rather than wait for the North American release. I never did have a North America version until the All Stars release on Snes, and probably 20 yrs after release for an actual NA NES cart. I actually enjoyed the Lost Levels, though I don't think I actually beat it back then.

Oh good lord, since I've had my SNES and Mario All-Stars I think I've managed to complete or nearly complete every game on there except Lost Levels, I may have to go and set it up now and have another go.

I have that version, and it is sweet. I'm so glad they put the level select in there. I've beaten most of world 1-8, but not so much of the extra levels. This game plays on your familiarity with SMB and issues you a real challenge.

I beat the SNES version of "lost levels" a few years back. I had been drinking bourbon all night and it apparently allowed me to transcend space and time. It was quite a grueling experience, nonetheless. The wind levels were so aggravating! I can't even begin to describe how happy I was when I finally beat it. Now I just have to beat Ghosts 'n Goblins for NES, lol.

I did it years ago on the SNES version. However, I took major advantage of the saving capabilities of the cartridge, and I'm sure I must have had a hundred or so continues before finally beating it.

And it has to be among the least fulfilling game endings ever.

I don't think that I've never finished it. I've gotten frustrated toward the end, at one level in particular.

I vastly prefer this to the original Super Mario Bros. The level design is so much more thoughtful and complex. It is a much more enjoyable experience and definitely more rewarding in the end. Not all the levels are outrageously difficult, but I a few had me really stuck for a while. I worked through this with a friend all night once, and he finally got sleepy at around 7 in the morning. He went home. I kept working on it. I finished around 9 in the morning. The game would have been much shorter, but there were a couple of levels I spent an hour or so on, repeatedly dying and dying.

I never found Lost Levels THAT hard. When the SNES version came out I beat it in one sitting, about 4.5 hours or so, including world a-d and 9.

The FDS version took me 3 or 4 tries, always losing on 8-4 when I didn't make it (on original hardware).

For a real man's challenge, you must beat Super Mario Bros. Special for the NEC PC-8801. That game is a bitch, especially when you can only use the keyboard. With patience, it too can be done. The Sharp X-1 version is easier, with better scrolling and joypad support.
