Dreamcast : 4 years
Playstation 2 : 10+ years

enough said.

Though I don't discredit the Dreamcast too much...I loved it when it was around.

It is all about personal preference really, both are just as good as each other.

The Dreamcast deserved a much better run than it got, but in my opinion the PS2 is in the running for best system of all time and really defined it's generation of consoles.

I would put the Dreamcast above the GameCube though, but I'm not so sure about how I would compare it to the XBox. I'll have to think about that one.

The PS2 for its superior hardware and 10 times the A+++ titles.
The DC votes were probably all made by Sega-16 visitors or something.

I agree 100% with this...

Not so sure on this one. Since I'm not a big fan of the original Xbox (I own a whopping 6 games for it) I can easily put it ahead of the Xbox in my eyes :)

Okay, now that the troll is banned, I have noticed that the Dreamcast has become overrated since its untimely demise. The PS2 dominated over 70% of the market, like the NES this means that it got most of the top software. There is no arguing that.

That said, the Dreamcast was the better console for the Arcade and Action games I like to play and certainly had at least as many worthwhile games as the PS2 well into 2004. In fact, since 2001 I have been mostly bored with gaming and very abhorred with reviews and general sentiment towards what few good Action games that have come out.

I can see saying that the PS2 has one of the best libraries around, but I don't think it was so great hardware-wise. Aside from how it and the original Playstation units failed as bad as or worse than 360's and other imperfections, the lack of progressive scan support really kills me.

It's so bad that I actually went and bought a backwards compatible Japanese PS3 just to play my games with a decent picture (they're pretty much all imports).

I just use a nice small clear-orange VGA box with my clear-smoke Dreamcast and 99% of games look beautiful even on HDTVs.

Anyways, if we're going by the software a console can officially play, then the backwards-compatible PS3 is by far teh greatest system evAR.

The Nintega Grafx-16 Vectrondo by far.

But since that was so obviously left out of this poll, I'll go with Dreamcast. Though I own more PS2 games, I enjoy the DC games more on average, and I look back on the Dreamcast more fondly (through my rose-tinted nostalgia glasses).

I discovered after I got my HDTV that there are actually a lot of PS2 games that support progressive scan.

I counted 173 games on that list. That's not much for a system with, what, 2,000+ games? Less than 10% compared to ~95% on Dreamcast.

I know, but definitely check it out on the ones that do. Makes some of them look much nicer.

I don't know that there's a definitive "better" since it's all down to personal preference. It's a shame the Dreamcast had such a short lifespan - but in terms of quantity/quality ratios I'd say it's my personal pick (out of every system). If we're talking sheer volume - PS2 literally has everything, every genre you could want - and it has it in spades. It has hundreds of fantastic mainstream hits, and hundreds of quirky, obscure, only-100-people-will-buy-this kinda games, too. It's an ugly, clunky system and nothing about it had the same whimsical charm as the Dreamcast but it's got a library of games to be reckoned with. In the end, I guess that counts for pretty much everything.

Dreamcast gets my vote. Mainly because it has games that I still care to play. The PS2 library doesn't have many games that I like to hold onto. I usually sell off my PS2 games after I beat them.

For me the deal breaker was Tengai Makyou III, since I'm such a huge TM/FEOE fan. Unfortunately, the game still isn't too clear when upscaled in progressive scan, because of the rotten haze that PS2 (and PS1) seem to have.

I had hoped for something like the clarity of Xbox 1 games played on a 360.

Also, not all those retro compilations support progressive scan either. It was still worth it to have a single machine to play all my Japanese Playstation brand games on. I also snagged a North Amercan backwards-compatible PS3 jut as they were discontinued.

It just sucks that Sony started things right and then decided to steal money straight out of people's pockets. Everyone who bought a physical copy of a game has already paid for the artistic license (or whatever they BS they want to call it) and should be able download an play the games for free if the hardware won't run them anymore.

Actually, the DC was on the market for less than 3 years (or less than 2 years for the US/Europe) before the discontinuation in early 2001.

Definitely a lot of wasted potential.

If you want to go by which system was more successful historically, that's a given, same for what had more software (and by extension, more to offer most people -like the NES vs Master System, etc), but there's the technical side as well. (hardware design elements in terms of programmability, cost effectiveness, etc, as well as the software end in terms of SDK/tool support -and of course pure real-world performance)

I think the DC wins across the board on the technical level. If it hadn't been for Sony's massive advantages, the PS2 probably would have failed. (ie if any other major player at the time had attempted to market the same hardware with the same development tools, they'd probably have been screwed -Sega, Nintendo, and Microsoft all had advantages on the technical side in different areas -and all sporting powerful development tools, but Sony beat them in spite of those advantages due to its far more substantial non-technical advantages -existing developer support, many exclusive, massive success in the previous generation with userbase/PR to draw on, massive spending on advertising/hype, in-house advantages of vertical integration and DVD patents, etc, etc)

PS2 gets my vote, at least it got a decent port of Shinobi III, and Phantasy Star IV.

I love the spirit of the Dreamcast, but I'm not in love with it. So PS2 all the way baby!

I also say the Dreamcast...If given the same time frame as the PS2 it would have held its own..when the ps2 first came out, Dreamcast games looked better than the ps2, and as time would have went on the graphics would only get better also.

I'm unsure. I really love the DC, but in terms of available/quality titles, there's no logical comparison.

It just depends on what types of games you like. Aside from VF4 and a couple light gun games I don't really know of any worthwhile arcade ports on PS2.

During it's active life cycle, the DC had the better game library, but the PS2 has long since surpassed it.
Ironically, there are still DC games I'm looking forward to, like Sturmwind. I really can't say the same about PS2.
