I'd really hold off on creating any more threads if I were you. As I've said before, just sayin'.

But to answer your question. Sonic 2, with S3&K a very close second.

Honestly, the only Sonic game I ever liked was the SMS version...as well as it's sequels (on the SMS).

Never liked the Genesis versions. Can't explain why.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles for me, closely followed by Sonic CD. Best 3D Sonic IMO is Sonic Adventure 2, though I did quite enjoy the PS2 version of Sonic Unleashed.

Sonic 2, only as S3&K wasn't an option. Sonic 2's better than 3 and better than '&K', but not both put together.

For me it was Sonic CD all the way. I loved the time travel aspect and I am seriously hoping that Sega ties that into the new Sonic Generations in some way or shape.

But, if I had to pick a cartridge version, it would be Sonic and Knuckles. That game was revolutionary for what it did. Not only did I get a new Sonic game, but I could play as the newcomer Knuckles in both Sonic 1 and Sonic 2?! Brilliant.

Yeah, Knuckles can only be played with in 2 and 3. I believe he was excluded from 1 because his color was incompatible with the Sonic 1's existing palette.

Yep. Sonic 1 didn't have the right colors in the game's color palette for Knuckles. If you look closely at the Knuckles sprite in the Hack his shoes are a different color than in S3&K.

Sonic Megamix was produced to achieve 1 goal: 1-up Sonic 1 &2. And that's what it did, perfectly. I've been playing and loving Sonic 1 & 2 ever since I was 6, and I loved and guarded those 2 games like they were my life. But when I played Sonic Megamix, every single time I thinked about playing Sonic 1 or 2, another thought springed in my mind saying "you might as well play Sonic Megamix," it's a shit ton more fun. And please, I don't care if it's a fan-made game. The poll here was about which Sonic game was the funnest, AND I HAVE ANSWERED THE QUESTION. Don't talk shit unless you've already played the masterpiece, Sonic Megamix. :hail:

I too second that notion...

btw, I really enjoyed Sonic Colors (both DS and Wii version). Seems like Sonic is finally heading in the right direction again.

Still, the best Sonic game is and remains... Sonic 3 & Knuckles, closely followed by Sonic 2 (Sorry Smithy ol' chum...)

Sonic 3 (&K) for 2D, with Sonic1 SMS following it
SA2 for 3D, Sonic Unleashed (nighttime, not daytime) following.

Sonic2 becomes an unfun chore halfway through the game, apart from Emerald Hill and Mystic Cave and perhaps Chemical Plant its full of boring stages.

Sonic 2 wins. It did everything Sonic 1 did, but more of the same and better. Sonic CD is also good, but it falls short on level design. Sonic 3 & Knuckes has worse graphics, naturalistic instead of the characteristic blocky style, and worse music. The other games aren't worth mentioning, except Knuckles' Chaotix which is total crap.

I voted for Sonic CD. Sonic 2 was good but Sonic CD felt like a much truer sequel.

Sonic 1 and Sonic CD have some similarities that the other installments don't share. Sonic 1 was fast and they promoted it with is "speed" but it really wasn't about blasting through the levels. There were stretches where sonic could hit his top speed, but I felt overall it was meant to be played at a slower speed.

Take the Marble Zone for instance. When the lava is released and starts to follow you its an all out speed moment. You have to get through the corridore as fast as you can. Then shortly before you go back outside there is a small, simple puzzle that forces you to stop and push a block onto a switch. I always found the puzzle odd and seemingly out of place, but I liked it. It made Sonic slow down and think for a moment.

Then in Sonic CD there is a stage (don't remember which one atm.) that had a Megaman inspired platforming section. Part of the stage is self contained and has a bunch of platforms that disappear and reappear similar to Electric Mans stage on Megaman. It forces Sonic to slowdown and take his time. You have to memorize that pattern and plan your jumps accordingly.

Again just like the Marble Zone puzzle, it was odd and out of place, but I enjoy it. I don't remember anything similar to these in Sonic 2, 3 or Knuckles.
So Sonic CD gets my vote, and the Spencer Nielsen soundtrack certainly doesn't hurt either.

Sonic 3 and knuckles of course - Super Tails! And of course the music and graphics, I liked the way Tails palette was and Sonic face and the whole levels layout. I remember I was sad that Tails did not turn into super in Sonic 3, but when I finally got S3&K, I was shocked to finally see him go super. Good times. I like every Sonic game where you could FLY with Tails, as nowadays you can't fly with him :C.

2nd favourite is Sonic Colours, it was very fun.

I mostly enjoy Sonic games.

If it is then we are both in trouble! lol

Sonic R is freakin' awesome! It had excellent graphics and effects that had never been seen on the Saturn before. Fun, creative tracks, an amazing Richard Jacques soundtrack, and overall an amazing experience.

Saturn Sonic R with the 3d controller played like a dream. The Game Cube port looked great but it didn't play near as well.

I agree with all of these points! My favorite version is the PC port though, it had the best contols. Saturn version is also amazing but it's still a little slippery. And then PC had the weather effects too. Personally though, I think it's a very underrated game!

I agree with this.

While Sonic 3 & Knuckles is an awesome video game epic, full of awesomeness, it was never the pure hedgehog sprinting awesome that was Sonic 2.

Sonic 3 as a stand alone game is woefully short, with crappy levels, level design and too bloody easy. It is a huge handicap when combined with Sonic & Knuckles - a bit like a robot with one entirely human leg having to compete in a race against a robot with wheels.

Sonic 3 is tosh. The amount of save games I used to have on my Sonic 3 cart for 'Level 3' was a joke. While I was able to endure the mundane nonesense of Hydrocity, the thought of spending ten minutes of my life forcing myself through the hideous Marble Garden Zone was too much, and what was my reward for completing Marble "Toshing" Garden? Carnival Night! Abject tosh.

Good thing is that I figured out how it works pretty quick. LOL

Knuckles' Chaotix all the way. So underrated!

I enjoy Chaotix quite a bit. The trick is though is to not think of it as a Sonic game. Much like Spinball. Once you figure out how the bungee system works you can haul ass. But one thing, regardless of the game itself is the music. People can hate the game and that's ok. But IMO Chaotix has some of the best Sonic music out there. That's why I made my own recordings of its soundtrack using my Model 1 HDG Genesis. I posted the sound track on Sega-16. In fact, here's a link guys. All CBR 320kbps stereo MP3.

Lol, great picture. And nice that you recorded this. I have it in 192kbps, but it seems like your files have a second or less kind of chopped off at the beginning. Then again I got my files from Sonic Retro I think.

And why does everyone hate on Carnival Night Zone? I feel like the only person on the internet who happens to enjoy that stage. Marble Garden and Hydrocity though I can agree with, those stages drag on FOREVER.

Cornholio857

There shouldn't be a second or less cut from the beginning. If there is I know it'd be less than half a second. I also recorded those tracks so that they should loop properly. Some may not be perfect though. I got tired of the ones on YouTube because they were recorded from an emulator and didn't sound 100% accurate. The ones on SonicRetro are close in quality to a Model 1 HDG. I messaged Tweaker that if he wanted to use them that he could. Never got a response back. LOL But thanks! Glad you enjoy them! I may record an extended mix of all the main songs if I ever get time. LOL

Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Huge game, loads of levels, very nice music and graphics, multiple characters to play through as, hidden goodies, sharp controls... it's a great game and fine send off for the original 2D series.
