Jackal was one of my favorite NES games. Anyone else have fond memories of this classic Konami game?

"Jackal represents a genre of games that aren’t seen very often anymore. This overhead view free roaming run and gun style is primarily seen in titles such as Gauntlet, but even that title has faded in recent years. It’s unfortunate to see developers leaving this style of game in the dust. The closest you can really find to it on a large-scale are the space/air bullet hell shoot ‘em ups, which are great fun in their own right, but simply are not the same. It’s Jackal’s easy and free-flowing gameplay that makes it so much fun."

My local Burger Chef had the Jackal arcade game. I loved it. I didn't hesitate to pick up the NES version when it came out and I was happy to see that it was rather faithful to the arcade.

I found it amusing when I went to view the other reviews on the site

The actual content of the site consists of two paragraphs while ads and other garbage along the right of the site continues for seven pages worth of scrolling.

Ahh! This is one of my favorite NES games! In fact, it was my #1 favorite game from '89 (when I first played it in kindergarten) until about '94 or so when I first played Shining Force II and fell in love.

I just played it again about two years ago to introduce it to a friend who had never played it. He agreed that it was an excellent game. I do have a query about it though. Does it have a hard mode that runs after you play through it, or does it just cycle relentlessly through with the same difficulty (because it certainly didn't seem any more difficult the second round)?

You're being unfair. There's only two "retro" reviews, but there's many others on the site.

Haha, thanks! Our site just started doing retro reviews, so we'll have more up in the future. Actually, I just discovered Retrogaming Roundtable today from one of our users. Looks like a great, active community! If you guys enjoy our retro reviews, I'll be sure to share more on the forums.

Jackal is a fantastic game. If you are looking for something similar, try Granada on the Genesis.

It was also my favourite game! I remember I was at granny and she had the Dendy and those pirated yellow carts and there was multicart with a Jackal in it. I even had beaten it. It had good music too, my favourite is the first one.

Great review and great game. I've had it since I was very young and have always enjoyed it. I believe I've only managed to beat it with the game genie.

Jackal's pretty B.A. My bro got it way back in the day and we used to play it a lot. Kind of odd that he liked this but hated bad dudes, as he loved the arcade.
