I have some scratched ps2 games. I'm trying to decide whether to have them professionally resurfaced or not. They all boot up fine, however, I havent played them all the way through in a while.
Have you ever had scratched ps2 game stop working, half way thru the game? even if it boots up alright?
Thanks!

As is common with missused CDs/DVDs, back in the early days of the system, my friend gave me his entire "loose" collection. Midway through Code Veronica (right after the fight with the dogs), the game just stopped playing. This same thing happened to me while Playing Jade Empire for the Xbox. But I blame the previous owner for negligence on their part. Since then, I've acquired sealed copies of each one.

Ghostbusters freezes after the first checkpoint for me. Heard it was a common bug.

When it comes to CDs, scratches are never good. My Jumping Flash 2 stops playing due to them and well as the Leon disc on Resident Evil 2. My suggestion is if you can buy a "like new" copy or even a new copy of the game, go for it. Or if they are on the online stores on Xbox Live or PSN, that's another option. Amazon is a good place as well.

Happened a few times.
Thankfully, ever since I got the resurfacer, all I do is just resurface the disc and it plays perfectly afterwards.

How do those work? I have never tried one out. Is it simple?

I once had Guitar Hero II freeze on me during a song.
And again, Ghostbusters The Video Game froze on me. I thought it was a bug caused by crappy pirating... guess not. :p

I had Sly 2 freeze on me at the end of the game. I mean I was about 30 minutes or so from completing the game and it stopped working. Then this caused my save to corrupt.

I had this happen once with a copy of Mega Man Legends (Which was improperly resurfaced), which died on me right outside the final boss. That really pissed me off; as I ended up renting a game from Blockbuster that I already owned just because I was that desperate to see the ending.

Not PS2, but my copy of Evolution for Dreamcast froze every time on the final cutscene. It was infuriating. I tried every trick to buff out scratches and nothing worked, I've still never finished it.

Yeah this happened to me a couple times, very frustrating. Its in the software not the physical disc.

The best way to verify if every sector in your PS2 disc is sound
Install the game with HDAdvance/HDLoader in a PS2 Fat. Even if the game is reputated not to run in the hard drive, it can still be installed. If no errors on the install, a good disc. There are a few games that cannot be verified by this method. Half Life, Raiden III and DVD9 discs.

Lol, I had a copy of psi ops on ps2 randomly freeze every time about 1/3 of the way through the game. I would walk through a door and then behind the door I would get stuck in nothing but whiteness lol.

I have a couple games where this happened though they're both PS1 games.
My current copy of Mega Man Legends 2 freezes at certain points but once you get to Bola (one of the early bosses) it's pretty much screwed and won't play even in a PS3. The game is pretty beat up but that's because the previous owner mishandled it.
My copy of Crash Team Racing played fine up until about 2 years ago, and now even though there's hardly any scratches on it, sometimes it'll freeze out of the blue. I had to resort to using codes to unlock everything again because it kept freezing during Adventure mode. =/
It mostly plays fine in my PS3 though.

If I have PS2 games fail on me because of scratches, it is usually when I try to load existing data or save new data. Usually it just freezes and that's that.

I'm curious to know now if you got my old copy. I bought a copy of Mega Man Legends 2 back when Babbage's was clearancing their PSX and N64 games, I think 2005. I could tell it was pretty messed up as it was badly scratched and I got occasional audio glitches. It completely locked up somewhere in a desert part of the game and would continually try to load the game. I ended up selling it to Game Crazy before it became rare.
