I've loved discs of tron since first seeing the walk-in cab. I've been trying to play it at home for years.

What's the best way to play discs of tron at home?

I've tried a few ports (the gba version, the XBLA version) but without a spinner they don't feel right. I've also tried mame, but again without the spinner it doesn't feel right.

Is there an easy solution to this? I don't have the skills or time necessary to build my own controller with a joystick and spinner in it. Can you just buy a USB controller that would work well with discs of tron?

The other thing is that the gba, XBLA and mame rom that I tried were missing the background graphics from the arcade and (I think) some of the digitized voice. I'm not sure if there is a way to fix this in mame.

It's a tricky setup if you don't have an authentic D.O.T. control panel.

Personally, I have the X-Arcade "tank stick" that has a trackball in the middle.

For Discs of Tron I set the trackball up to handle the horizontal/vertical aiming, and I set the player 1 and player 2 start buttons as fire and deflect. They're close enough to the trackball that it's comfortable. It's like rolling a mouse and left/right clicking.

When setting up the D.O.T. controls, remember that you don't get to test/use vertical aiming until the 7th level with the different level platforms.

In MAME the rom for the "environmental" version of the game has the audio samples of Sark taunting you, and in MAME 32/UI and probably older versions, you can display the "background" which will drop a simulation of the background image behind the game.

You just need to be sure to enable and then display backgrounds for that game in order to see it. You can also turn on the bezel art, which is nice, but depending on how big your screen is, you'll wind up with a much smaller play area.

I have the DOT artwork file if you need it. Let me know and I'll send it to you.

Awesome reply, thanks for the instructions! I sent you a pm with my email address :)

Before, I tried using my mouse as the spinner, moving left and right and the wheel to move vertically. It worked well enough, but not great.

I wish you could buy a cheap usb spinner somewhere.

I sent the files over around noon.

Always happy to help!

Doubly so when it has to do with TRON!
