View Full Version : Turbografx, Neogeo Pocket or Mega CD?

I have most "succesful" systems, and now I'm going to get another one. Which should I get? from those three?

Turbografx would be cool to have, but games are hard to find in PAL regions and I'd have to import games. Even though you can do a region mod to use it's difficult to do. Turbo Duo and such are discarded because I want Hu-card games for now.

Neo Geo Pocket color are the cheapest of the three to get, but the non-backlight screen it's not so good, and it has mostly fighting games, that I'm not a really huge fan of.

The Mega CD is in the middle ground for price, but it's just the system with connectors, no box. Still, it has some cool games (Rpg's, Sonic CD...), but they are pretty expensive to get.

Anymore things I should know about them?

A NTSC-J PC Engine DUO-R or DUO-RX without doubt. Try to get a RGB modded one.

The Sega CD doesn't really have that many good games. There's the Lunar games and such, but very not much beyond that.

The NGPC is probably the worst handheld along with Game Gear in my opinion.

In France, Sodipeng had made a contract with NEC in order to sell modified PC-Engine/Core graphx. You should try this way if you decide to take a PC Engine.

By the way, these 3 consoles are really different. What kind of game do you prefer?

Don't bother with the lackluster first Turbografx. Unless you have money to toss into upgrading it. At stock config it's RF only, has a different controller port than Turbo Duo or PC Engine (limiting its variety), and working CD drives are irritatingly difficult to find alone should you later want to play those games.

I would say go for the Mega CD first. If you already have a Genesis it is the best deal by far, especially when you consider how many of the lesser known games go for less than $20.

Going for a TurboGrafx-16 will eventually require the CD upgrade and a cartridge port converter for PC-Engine HuCard compatibility. You would be better off going for a Duo/R right away. The Mega CD definitely has more "good" games than the western TG16 HuCard library does. Well, I am supposing that the European Mega CD library is the same as the US Sega CD library. The TG16 plus Super CD is a much more even match considering the region free CD-ROMs of the PCE CD.

I can't comment on the Pocket Color, but my impression is that it didn't last long enough to come close to either of the above libraries.

Unfortunately, the RPGs haven't been released in Europe (except for Shining Force CD which is not exactly a RPG).

The big problem with the PC Engine Duo is the reliability of the CD drive.

That explains why I see so many Europeans calling the Sega CD a bad product. Between that and the historical exchange rates inflating the price I would probably feel the same way.

Sega CD versus TG16 HuCards, yes I would say so depending on the gamer being open to more genres. I own both and enjoy both, but without the Turbo CD and Japanese library the Sega CD has 149 games versus 94 TG16 HuCards. I suppose it depends on what the individual thinks of the quality ratio for both formats. Realistically it comes more down genre preferences and price tolerance.

-edit-

Really my recommendation was more informed by the hardware cost per game and the average cost per game being significantly lower for the Sega CD.

This is an odd topic since you're comparing such different systems.

I'm just piping in to offer my 2 cents about the ngpc. It has a really good screen despite not being backlit. Also it's fighters are great for a handheld.

I would say go with the TG16..its more fun to collect for, and it has some very good games..If you can get a TurboDuo, it plays Hu cards, Turbo CDs, and Super CDs, and imports.

Personally, I'd rule out the TG-16 unless you have deep pockets. Stuff is rare, especially in the wild and the US library is mostly junk. Also expect to pay out the ass for most of the best games for the system.

SEGA CD isn't as bad as you can get lucky and find some games for cheap that are great, like Silpheed, Sonic CD, and Eternal Champions. And systems don't go for more than $45-50.

NPGC is actually a very underrated handheld, though it's hard to compare it to the other two systems. If you love fighters and handheld game systems though, it's definitely recommended.

NGPC has an excellent screen. Under daylight, nothing beats it.
