We've discussed everything else to no end, but how about the best logo? I was going to put a poll, but there are far too many choices.
I always liked the Saturn Logo. Some look good like the GC and DC on start up, but not so much as a static logo.
I like the 3DO one as well. But I have noticed there aren't a lot of logos anymore. The only current logo that jumps out is the Xbox 360

For me, it has to be the Atari logo. Just looking ai it, even from far away, one knew it was from Atari. Plus it has a simple, yet elegant design, that immediately identifies it from the crowd.
Plus, it's one of the most universally known symbols in history...at least video game history.

I always liked the original logo for the playstation. The one that appears when you boot up a ps1 game.

Aside from the Atari logo I was always pretty fond of the Sega CD logo. I like how the "CD" in Sega CD resembled an actual CD.

I have always liked the Super Famicom logo, especially over the plain Super Nintendo colors, and the well designed Gamecube logo.

The Virtual Boy logo is also kinda neat

I'm not sure which console logo is my favorite, but the Saturn's S ring, Nintendo64's 3D N and Gamecube's cube shaped G logos were all VERY clever designs. The previously mentioned SEGA CD's disc shaped CD font was also really neat. It wasn't as refined at the others I named, but it was still pretty clever.

The Saturn has always been my favorite, but the Famicom Disk logo is also really cool and seems to get forgotten.

Some logos are nice and sleek, but I am particularly fond of the happy logo of the Neo Geo. Runner up probably goes to the Turbo Duo.
EDIT: I forgot about the Jaguar! That has to be tied with the Neo Geo, actually.

I don't understand why game companies (or any company for that matter) would change their logos so much when they have a huge following. I have noticed that people like logo number 47 of Nintendo or logo number 61 of Sega but nobody seems to have a single logo to reference. I guess Atari would be the longest lasting but even they changed their prominent logo with the Lynx. In the auto industry (where I work) I always like how German car makers NEVER change their logos completely. A BMW logo from the 1960's is similar to a BMW logo from today. The same can be said with VW and Mercedes. As much as I like Nintendo I wish they would of kept only their original logo and stopped making logos for every system. The circled Nintendo logo should be prominent and ONLY the name of the system should follow. They should get people to recognize the entire Nintendo brand and not just a single system.

Haha, yeah that was a good one too. Back in 1997 when the Babbages I worked for was closing, I got to take home a huge, cardboard 3D Nintendo 64 "N". I wish I didn't get rid of it now...
It looked something like this:

Game intros are the hood ornaments of videogames, ultimately. Although why the hell did Konami change their logo after all those years? They had something unique to them, now they have this bland lifeless thing.

The circled Nintendo logo should be prominent and ONLY the name of the system should follow. They should get people to recognize the entire Nintendo brand and not just a single system. These companies DON'T change their logos though. Each console has a console specific logo, but this doesn't relate to the parent brand. You seem to understand this based on the latter portion of your post, which makes your initial statement of not getting it a little confusing.
Each console entity is it's own market. Saturn games, accessories, and compliments don't work or relate to Genesis ones. Anyone, especially a layman, can identify a console specific game or piece of hardware at a glance when it's branded with a specific identifying marker. That's the whole point of a logo in the first place. It's a visual cue that the general public can easily identify with your brand and product in an instant.
My other half for example (who's the epitome of a 'casual' gamer) would know that a Dreamcast game or peripheral is a Dreamcast one off the bat because of the prominent orange swirl logo. If it just said SEGA, and only featured the blue company logo, she would have to read on, and then reread it a few times after she second guessed herself to be sure that the item was Dreamcast related, and not SEGA CD, or Saturn, or possibly another SEGA system that she never heard of.
BTW, Atari is a terrible example to reference. If anything, it's an argument for having a console specific logo for each release. The fact that Atari consoles that followed the 2600 didn't have a strong identity of their own only HURT the company's sales and reputation. Hell, I'm a seasoned gamer and I still have to look twice to make sure a 7800 game isn't a 2600 game on my own shelf.
Also, cars do have model specific logos. Some high end makes may not, but most low and mid-range cars have a make specific logo featured someone on the vehicle. It's usually the vehicle name in a specific font, but other times it's more graphical/ornate.
Mustangs, Viper's, Firebird's ect. have their own logos: http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSbEv4RXmNeZvepouY63qpu2VHPxSFs1 0nXRMNEtbfehlylJRKc http://thumbs.ebaystatic.com/pict/190521264781_0.jpg http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS_xCAaI21otrXKW3zmAqeze_CYNYiYu 9z4Fcoy0TIsF77j29hfIA&t=1
This doesn't mean that Ford, Dodge or Pontiac changed or abandoned their corporate logo.

Konami actually had a yet another logo before 1986. I don't like it has much as their swirly logo, but it's better than their newer one. Here (http://www.gamefaqs.com/nes/577967-ganbare-goemon-karakuri-douchuu/images/screen-1) is a picture of the old logo.

Fanboy aside, the actual PlayStation brand logo (the P over the S) hit home instantly. It was just perfect and to this day it is still one of my favorites of all time.
The GameCube's logo was also well done, being the Cubed G, and I always thought the Turbo Grafx (US Side) had a nice retro flair to it, especially with the peculiar color choices of brown, yellow and orange.
The Neo Geo had a neat set of logos, both it's font (symmetrical sans the N and G) and the Neo Geo CD logo is also fun, like a poke at the theatrical happy / sad masks, but happy and laughing instead.
It's a tie between PS1 and U.S. Sega Saturn logo.

Well the companies themselves don't change their logos, but they create a new logo for each console to make it a distinctive product brand. Imagine if Nintendo would use the same logo for all their systems; would they just add the word "Super" before their familiar Nintendo logo? Then add a 64 after it for the N64? It would look odd. Although Sony sort of did that with the playstations, while they all have their own product logos they also all sport that PS symbol.
Plus the thread asked which console logo was your favourite. I guess if I had to pick a favourite console developer logo I'd probably go with the SEGA logo. I hope they never change it.

Anyone know when Sega adopted that particular font? It's that original '70s Battlestar Galactica style lettering, I was wondering what time period it was developed in.
And back to the question at hand, the Atari logo for me, but more specifically, the rainbow color cycling version of the Fuji logo that was the end tag on all the TV commercials for 2600 games, along with the choir singing "Have you played Atari today?"

Yeah, the Fugi insignia is a really cool logo. Simple, clean, powerful. I should have been prominently featured on the Jaguar's case rather than just in-game. ;) (maybe they thought it looked "old" . . . but that was their fault for not launching a 4th gen console -though they didn't look so old in Europe with the success of the ST and the fairly competitive Lynx beating the Game Gear by a sizable margin)
I have always liked the Super Famicom logo, especially over the plain Super Nintendo colors, and the well designed Gamecube logo.
Yuck . . . I hate those rainbow colors on the SFC/Euro SNES, the Saturn (white) and DC made it even worse.
The lavender on the US SNES looked a lot better, though the system still looked a bit funky. (don't care for the SFC's case design either, but it's got nicer lines in some ways -the SNES2 looks cleaner, but it's also a bit boring -the gray on the JP version looks better than the lavender/purple too)
Of course, the US SNES logo wasn't purple either, just the dark gray Super Nintendo Entertainment System text.
I also like the Atari logo used on the 7800 splash screen.
The 5200's boot screen looks a bit cooler IMO. ;)
The Saturn, N64, and Gamecube logos are all really neat to look at, especially the N64's.
The PS logo looks a bit like the N64 logo too.
Overall, I think I'd have to go for the North American Sega Genesis logo (the one on the console, either the early one with the slightly different shading, or the later one -but not the one on the later red-stripe game boxes).
The Euro MD logo is pretty good too, though I don't care for the JP MD logo as much. (I prefer the more angular US Genesis insignia over the rounder European Megdrive one)
But as for a company logo/insignia rather than a console one, I'd have to go with Atari's Fugi symbol.
