View Full Version : Opening up a Virtual Boy

So I'd like to attempt to repair my Virtual Boy, as it's been sitting for a while with a messed up right screen.

The last time I tried to repair it, I could not find a bit that was long enough to reach into the casing's deepest screws. I found that people were modifying gamebits by grinding them down so they'd fit... I really don't want to do that (and don't really have the means to, sadly).

I found this link on an old thread: http://newelectronx.com/proddetail.php?prod=gamebit

I am still skeptical that it'll fit, though.

Has anyone had any luck with any particular gamebit?

For Virtual Boy you'll most likely need a dedicated driver. There's one place that I know of which sells them, and they're somewhat expensive.

And a chart for which sizes you'd need.

I posted all this before in another thread so I basically copied what I posted for this one.

what you need is an extension. I got a vb apart once with one of the standard nintendo bits(I think it was the one for snes systems)
Search for an old thread on this forum by jibbajaba, he made a custom extension himself that worked pretty cool. I have NFI how i did it, but I know it had to do with his information.

Pretty sure he welded the bit into place then ground the whole thing down so the bit (and socket of the driver) were flush with the shaft of the driver. And then he sold it for five bucks when he didn't need it anymore, insane.

I miss Jibbajaba

I just repaired a VB last night. I ended up grinding a flathead screwdriver to be able to grab the security screws that my standard bits couldn't reach. It took awhile but I was able to remove the screws and perform the repair.

Less than $5 for the 4.5mm bit. I just hit up eBay and skip his $36 "Cadillac" of screwdrivers.

Any that you know for sure would work in a Virtual Boy without any modifications? If people have to weld or grind them down I don't see the point in using them at all, unless you have tons of free time and other equipment lying around your home already.

Most bits still have to be modified, but it's pretty straightforward - http://www.projectvb.com/tech/securitybit.html

I think that's what Jibbajabba did except the whole deal was one solid piece. I miss him as well, and the MAME League.
