View Full Version : Genesis s-video on LCD problem / component to VGA?

My model 1 Genesis is modded for s-video and component. I have a Dell 2007 LCD with s-video input that is shared with my SNES. The SNES I've been using for 5 years and it looks great, so I thought I'd give it a shot with the Genesis.
Well, it looks like the image below. Why? Because it's an LCD? Why does the SNES look fine? Is my only choice for Genesis on s-video a standard-def CRT television?
So it's also modded for component. I know there are standard-def CRT TVs with component and s-video ins; I started to notice these 10 years ago. Well, I don't have the time, money, and space to track one down right now. Is a component --> VGA converter a viable option? Like this one:

Have you tried it on a CRT to make sure that overly bad vertical line issue isn't present on it too? It could be one of the caps or another part that was used in the mod is going bad.

Hmm. I get Genesis vertical lines for an seemingly totally unrelated reason, in my case it's with model 2 or CDX using an RGB to HDMI converter (I don't yet have a model 1 / master system cable to check those).

Just wanted to update this and say that the modder, shadowkn55, tried adding a pot to the s-video mod on his own system and still got the same lines on an LCD but not a CRT. Since I don't have a CRT and don't see getting one for a long time (space issues), I said "screw it" and got a YPbPr--> VGA adapter (I should add that shadowkn55 has been very helpful and communicative with everything). So I've spent about 150 bucks now, but the Genesis on my Dell monitor looks AMAZING. I switch to the SNES on s-video and it's a clear downgrade (despite the SNES's improved graphics). The clarity is really something. YPbPr may look better on a CRT but ignorance is bliss.
Now to get the SNES ....oh somebody help me!!

You can buy a SCART cable for your SNES and get a SCART to component converter which you can then run through your component to VGA converter. I have a SCART to component setup for my neo geo and my genesis and they both look awesome! They are hooked up to a CRT.

Until I can get a CRT, I would need YPbPr--> VGA, so I would need the SCART cable, SCART RGB-->YPbPr converter, then convert that to VGA. As I would then have two YPbPr sources and one VGA input, that complicates things (my YPbPr--VGA converter can take only one component source). Would a SNES SCART from the UK work? What about NTSC vs. PAL and all that?

I had the same issue with a CRT tv I had, I switched CRT sets and the lines went away.
