so as part of my new job I got a free ps3 (yay I guess?)
i've really not been following modern games much lately (other then the online castlevania on 360)

i'm curious what are some intersting ps3 games that might be worth checking out on the system?

I have (that I like):
disgea 3 :love the strategy game and the system, fucking hate the stupid colour matching puzzle bullshit.
white knight chronicles: amazingly fun rpg, lots of custominzing and generally fun (and it has pokemon!)
sega genesis collection: not much needs to be said here.
final fantasy 13: holy fuck this is shit

my favorate games in no particular order are:
zanac
ultima exodus (nes)
final fantasy 8
final fantasy tactics
castlevania sotn (and all of its awesome clones)
super hydlide
super pitfall 1 & 2

what games would people recomend me checking out? (based on the above knowlege)

Valkyria Chronicles
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (God of War clone but still fun)
maybe Hyperdimension Neptunia

Somebody was going to post this, so might as well be me: Demon's Souls. This game isn't for everyone, but it is cheap enough now that everyone should at least try it out.

Folklore might be something to look into, play the demo maybe. I've only played the demo, so can't say more.

Uncharted 1 & 2

Uncharted 1 & 2

Start with these two. They'll make up for starting with

final fantasy 13: holy fuck this is shit

It really is horrendous.

Also consider Batman Arkham Asylum. It's a Metroidvania with Batman. Tons of fun.

Based on the games you bought and the games you like, it's really hard to give recommendations as there's not much that's good on the PS3 that is similar(infact other than RPGs, not much similar at all.) I'll second everything that's been listed so far. Also

Yakuza 3
Yakuza 4
Dante's Inferno
Eternal Sonata(maybe. I've heard it's good, but I've never played it. This gen is really lacking when it comes to good RPGs.)

I enjoyed Infamous and God Of War III as well as others listed here, I would really recommend Port's suggestion in Arkham Asylum and even Assassins Creed II and Brotherhood.

Uncharted 1 & 2

Definitely.

Awesome game, though for some reason it reminded me of Tomb Raider.

I doubt anyone else will list it but I'm going to recommend Heavenly Sword as a good PS3 game. It can be picked up pretty cheap, too.

Demon souls defiantly seems right up my alley, are the uncharted games more like tomb raider (yay) or more like god of war (big fat boo) i've heard a bit of chatter about them at work, but its coming from the halo/socom crowd (not my types of games at all)

They're actually more like Gears of War than God of War in terms of gameplay (duck and cover system) but they run much much faster/leaner than Gears.

They share a genre/aesthetic with Tomb Raider, but they're much lighter on the block pushing puzzles. If you like action adventure platforming it's hard to go wrong with Uncharted.

As far as cinematic action adventure games with great characters, they're some of the best, most satisfying games in the genre on any system, ever.

If you enjoy kart racing games, don't pass up Mod Nation Racers. It's all the brilliance of Mario Kart, with the most amazing, simple to use character, kart and track creation tools. It's mind-blowing what you can make (and what millions of user have made already) ... literally every conceivable character has been made at this point ... I checked for you (they have an online app), somebody made a Blitzwing character... and the gameplay is just pitch-perfect.

I'll cast another enthusiastic vote for Batman Arkham Asylum, it may very well be the most well crafted super hero game ever, and nothing has ever done Batman so right ... and the Joker challenge levels are really fun.

I can't believe on one mentioned Metal Gear Solid 4! I know it doesn't really go along with your taste, but it is an awesome exclusive. Lot's of great games already listed in this thread.

pretty much was burnt out after the first metal gear solid (war games bore me) tried to get into the second one, but was more of the same thing (don't get me wrong loved the nes ones and the first psx one) "hide, wait for guy to walk by, punch, repeat"

If you like Mario Kart style gameplay, I'd check out ModNation Racers. It's fun and has endless replayability due to the creation tools. Might not hurt to check out LittleBigPlanet 1/2 as well. If you like fighters (non traditional) and follow the anime/manga of Naruto, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 was a great experience playing through. Loved every minute! And lastly, give Portal (Orange Box) and Portal 2 a go if you haven't played these. Brilliant.

I'm also a recent switch hitter thats been getting into the PS3 groove lately. Luckily I started collecting games for it years ago. The only selection I will make that hasn't been made yet is Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Like most NG games it's hard as hell but thats half the fun of it....when you aren't throwing your controller in frustration.

There's some pretty good games on PSN.......o wait.

What I want to know as a new PSN member is rather they get free games the way the 360 gets atleast 2 free DLC games a year. Yes I know that PSN is currently down but when it comes back up are there any free download games I should look for?

I would have to second some of the suggestions on here. Based on the games you've listed, FFXIII, Demon Souls, and Folklore might be up your alley? If you want suggestions that aren't related to the games you listed, my top five would be Metal Gear Solid 4, God of War 3, Uncharted 2, Uncharted 1, and Red Dead Redemption. Heavy Rain and Infamous are also great games. Just to address your Metal Gear Solid comment earlier, while there is still waiting around and stealth involved in MGS4, it's a very open game as to how you can play it. You can play it as a stealth game, a shooter, or a tradition 3rd person action game, or a combination of all 3. These games are all dirt cheap now as well.

Seconded.

Also:

Nier
3D Dot Game Heroes
Enslaved (similar to Uncharted).

Good choices all around. Most of the recommendations were pretty solid. Demon's Souls is AMAZING...but it's slow at first...you WILL have to play through some areas multiple times to build up. Ends up being worth it in the long run IMO though.

Dragon Age I haven't tried...but if you like that sort of thing at all...I'd also HIGHLY recommend Oblivion (Elder Scrolls IV) which should also be dirt cheap.

I have 3D Dot Game Heroes and Enslaved too but I haven't tried em.

I do think you should grab Uncharted 1 and 2 if you can get em cheap enough...they're really outstanding Tomb Raider style games with just a BIT less exploring and a bit more run and gun. Tomb Raider Underworld was also quite fun for cheap. Infamous and Heavenly Sword were mentioned too and both are pretty fun.

I'll throw a couple other titles out there you may have passed up. It's simple and a bit silly but I really enjoyed Conan. It's dirt cheap too...locally copies are like $5 new. Brutal Legend was also pretty fun even if the RTS sections suck ass...the story and game are fun, especially if you like heavy metal..and it's also dirt cheap.

For other stuff...perhaps look at Little Big Planet (surprised no one mentioned it) and the first Dead Space was very fun too, though it doesn't fit in your genre lists.

Not sure if you are into the Star Ocean series, but I will recommend Star Ocean: The Last Hope International. A lot of people didn't like it very much (the story is mediocre and the pacing isn't very good in some spots, i.e. very long cut scene then very long dungeon) but I can't get enough of it.

It's a good battle system and a lot of collectibles (literally like 500 hours of gameplay if you try to do everything and get all the PSN trophies and stuff).

But like I said...might want to try the demo...its definitely not for everyone.

It's not an exclusive, but Vanquish is a favorite of mine. If you like hailstorms of bullets, big robots exploding, and great visuals then it's the game for you. CGR Mark rather likes it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAN2-OZ3it4

Also, the Ratchet and Clank Future games on the PS3 are rather good. I've only ever played Tools of Destruction, but the other two get good ratings on Metacritic, so they're probably very good.

As for RPG games, I can't really think of any that haven't already been listed above. If you're not interested in just exclusives, there's always Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Borderlands, and Oblivion if you haven't played them already.

It had the same experience with Demon's Souls .... bought after it came out and it was pretty "meh" for me.

Almost a few year later I gave it another chance and that gem became my favorite game of all time, at least invest 5 hours and you may love it too

Get to my soul level on Demon's Souls so you can accept my red stone invitation. I want to kill you(on the game btw.)

MY boss pretty much told me the same thing about demon souls, it just feels like a kings field rip off with pretty graphics, the combat doesn't seem inspried at all....I'll give it another try this weekend since everyone seems to hold it in high regards, maybe i'm missing something blatantly obvious?

You'll find Demon's Souls on favorite PS3 games lists for good reason. The combat is flawless and is what makes Demon's Souls. Having excellent graphics doesn't hurt either. I'm a fan of almost all FromSoftware games and Demon's Souls is one of their best, arguably the best, but that depends on who you talk to.

Even though the single player game is amazing, nothing is as fun as playing as or fighting against a Black Phantom(PvP battle.)

Dark Souls is going to be amazing and 360 only owners will finally get to try.
