Last night I spent about five hours playing "Street Fighter Alpha 3: Saikyo Dojo" for the SEGA Dreamcast and it got me to thinking about what the first online-playable Street Fighter game is. Now Saikyo Dojo is a good nominee for this as it is the first online versus Street Fighter game of which I can think, but I figure the vastness of the DP knowledge store is the best place to seek a conclusive answer.

Ah, it is too true that Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers could be played online, and it is most likely the first, so thanks for that info. But does anyone know which Street Fighter was the first to be played in online versus without the use of additional hardware like the XBand?

Possibly Super Street Fighter II X for Dreamcast; however, same year as Alpha 3

In 2000, Capcom released Super Street Fighter II X for Matching Service for the Dreamcast in Japan as a mail-order release on Dreamcast Direct (Later Sega Direct). The Dreamcast version features an online versus mode, as well as other features such as selectable Super Combo gauges and the returning of the bonus rounds from the previous Street Fighter II games.

buzz_n64, you so knowledgeable! :) By the way, if you (or anyone else) knows, which Street Fighter games introduced the Super Combos, Ultra Combos, EX moves, Focus moves, X-ism, A-ism, and V-ism mechanics? I'm pretty sure the Alpha series introduced A-ism, X-ism was the renamed old SSFII system, and the 32-bit EX series introduced EX moves, but I'm not certain on most of these.

Supers started with SSF2T.

EX moves started in Darkstalkers and made there way into the Street Fighter series in SF3:2nd Impact.
