Genesis boxes are really handy, but the hang-tabs can kinda get in the way sometimes. Do you all keep them on or cut them off?

I cut most of mine off when I was a kid. I don't know if I'd do it nowadays.
Considering you can get Genesis sports games for pennies, it's not like there is (currently) a shortage of donor cases to replace them with. I just haven't bothered, myself.

I too am interested to see what people say here.
About half of my genesis games have the tabs the other half do not.
I can stack cartridge only games/manual/etc on top of the ones without which is convenient.
The ones with the tab are awkward to work around when storing games. I've considered tearing them off but I'm too much of completionist to deface them.

I leave them, but I've gotten plenty without.

I cut them off during the 90s, and I still do today. I assume most people aren't hanging them on hooks.

I prefer them without but I generally won't cut one off. One time I had one that someone tried to rip off and it just looked ugly so I snipped it. I really like the cases that never had hang tags but there is not many games like that.

I only buy mint CIB, and I only buy with hanging tabs. If the game looks mint on eBay or another source (even brick n mortar), but lacks the hanging tab, I skip it for one that has it. Why circumcice your boxes? Stack them? That's terrible looking. Boxed games look best (and will last longer) displayed side-by-side (one shelf a row).

The strange thing is cutting the tabs is a very common occurence on Genesis while in comparison I see Master System tabs being intact over 90% of the time. As for me, I never cut them off but if I got a game with a cut tab so be it. I wouldn't go to the trouble to replacing the case for that.

I don't cut them, but a fair number were already removed when I bought them. I prefer to have them, but the lack of a tab isn't a deal breaker for me.

I always chopped them as a kid, I don't bother with that anymore.. I prefer the chopping for shelf and handling ease.. although the cuts could sometimes maybe end up giving you a scratch...

I use to cut them because I made shelves that fit the boxes perfectly. The little tabs got in the way and wouldnt slid into place. Now I just bend them so they fit. I wonder if anyone who ordered Pier Solar cut the tab???

My first Genesis collection that I sold off years ago I cut the tabs off the boxes. The collection I have now though I don't bother cutting them off. I could care less if the hang tabs are there or not when I buy a game.
I require them, no hang tab sucks

Genesis hang tabs. Just another reason why Genesis does what Nintendon't. I've always wanted a Genesis collection that I can hang on a removable coat hanger. One closet for my clothes, the other for my Genesis games. It's more sophisticated that way.

Used to cut when I was a kid (Master System boxes too), nowadays I generally keep them on, particularly if it's a rare game.

I say leave them on, unless they drive you insane.

Leave them on. I used to cut them off when I was younger, but now I swap out my non hangtab cases in my collection with ones that have it whenever I can.

I think the real question here is does anybody store their Genesis/Master System games on a retail peg-board that would necessitate the existence of in-tact hang-tabs?

Doubtful, as it would require you to take all of the games off of the shelf to get one. And not viewed easily.
Even stores where this might be done, it would simply be impractical. Better off stacked them vertically with the label pointing out.

I'd never cut off the hang tabs off; I never have. The idea of defacing the box of something that I collect is off putting to me. The tabs have never been a problem for me when I store my cases. I'd never store them on their end (I don't store ANY media that way), I store them side by side, upright. All I have to do is bend the tab inward a little when I slide them onto my shelf if it's a low one.
I don't let missing tabs prevent me from purchasing games though, I simply replace the case with another with the tab intact.
I think a lot of people who collect (anything, not just games) don't really think about the best way to do it, honestly. I mean, a lot of the people here are fanatic about games, and take the collecting aspect as seriously as the gaming, if not more. I don't think a lot of people really think about the best way to do it though, and they end up with neutered cases, crushed boxes, scratched labels, etc.. A lot of times they don't realize what they do/did was an issue until they see another person's collection, done better, and by then might regret the way they went about it. Sometimes it's just a matter of lost efficiency, but then there are instances where they did something damaging, or irreparable, and regret it later. I can't think of any sort of collectible media that's such that you have to damage it to store or display it properly or well.
Granted, if someone genuinely doesn't care, that's fine. It's just that I'm always hearing from people about how "they wish that they didn't sell this, damage that, write in the manuals, put their names on the carts in permanent marker, toss the boxes/sleeves/dust covers, etc.". People removing tabs are just another one of those things they may regret later, albeit to a lesser extent than some of the other things I mentioned.

In order to get one you could open the Genesis case from where it's hanging and take the game out. Replace it when you're done. Have them hanging alphabetical order.

You want the tags to be useful don't you? Then you've got to hang them up.

You want the tags to be useful don't you?Useful? I don't. I really don't care how functional or practical they are, I just don't want to 'break' pieces of the packaging off.
FWIW, I use to hang my Master System (and later Genesis) games on the wall of my bedroom when I was a kid using the hang tab. When I ran out of room (I only did one column) I'd only hang my 'top 10' favorite games up. So it was something of a wall of fame.

Removing the tabs is a travesty, and crime against video gamety.

What a coincidece, I just posted a thread exactly like this over at Sega - 16 a while back.

Personally, I cut them. Off with their tabs!
Although lately I kept the tabs on the CIB Musha and the USA and Reprint copies of Pier Solar. Just can't bring myself to do it with those.

This is an interesting thread. Every time I come across cases with tabs broken off I ask myself, "who does that?". Especially when I can see that the tab was intentionally broken off. I feel the same way about the tags on Beanie Babies (I don't collect them, but I do have a few).
Granted, I even keep the plastic strips that you remove from the batteries of new Tamagotchi, so I'm probably more anal than most collectors. Still, intentionally breaking off the tabs on Genesis and Master System cases seems extreme for someone who actually collects games.
I realize that not every one who games is a collector, but in a community of collectors it's interesting to see that so many do it.
