View Full Version : Probably a dumb Genesis question

Alright so I recently dug out my Genny model 1 and a few games. It's been awhile since I used it so my "issue" may not even be an issue at all. Anyway, for most of the games when I put them in and turn them on they fire up right away. However for others they just kinda hang there before the Sega logo shows up. One of them hangs there for a good 3-4 seconds. I don't remember them doing that when did have it out. Is this normal for some games?

Also, it takes quite a bit of force to get the carts in and out of the system. I have owned a model 2 Genesis and it wasn't anywhere near as tough to get them in and out as it is with my model 1. Does that differ on model? Anyway thanks for the help on my noob questions :P

I would just recommend cleaning your contacts, but if the games start I don't think that would cause a slow down, so Im not too sure. I wouldnt worry if the slot is too tight. I have heard that after years of use the slot can become looser due to pushing the pins back or leaving cartridges in there for long amounts of time. I also seen people use tools to even pry every single pin out a little more and making the slot more tight thus making the pins have better contact with the cartridge.

Ah well I probably should have said in the first post that I did clean the contacts on all the games, so that's probably not it. It's not really that big of a deal. It's just kind of annoying to sit there and wait 4 seconds for my Maximum Carnage cart to start. Also I've noticed that the EA games have a little bit of hang time to them as well.

The first thing I thought was not that your games were the issue, but the Gen itself. Maybe someone here has some experience with the time-vulnerable components of the model 1?

Capacitors and the like? I've heard of plenty of odd things happening because of capacitors going bad (the oldest Genesises are what, 20-25 years old now?) such as one or more sound channels not working, the system not booting at all amongst others.

But never this. Sounds like your contacts are filthy and potentially in need of being adjusted.

I'm sure it's fine, I wouldn't worry about it. A tight cart slot is always a good thing.

Well I did try and clean the contacts of the Genesis though I am not sure how good of a job that did. All I did was run a q-tip with rubbing alcohol up and down the cart slot. Is there a better way of cleaning it? I may try and adjust it, though I have no idea how to do that so I'll have to do some research.

It's not so much the tight cart slot I'm worried about anymore. I just find the hanging black screen the most annoying. The weird thing is it doesn't do that with all the games, just a handful of them. So I don't know what the deal is.

Some games take longer to load than others, I've had games take a long time to start too. A few times when testing out games I though some were dead, only I then decided to leave the system on longer and eventually they started up fine. Try the games on another system to see if there's a difference, I think it's normal though.

Alright well I am glad to know that I am not the only one with this issue. I won't worry about it then. Thanks for the help guys.
