Help me figure out the name of this PSX game

Okay, so my brother's girlfriend is trying to remember the name of a game she played when she was younger. This is what she was able to tell me.

It's on PSX.
It's an RPG-type game (her definition of that may be slightly different than most of ours here, though. She doesn't consider Pokemon to be an RPG, but a strategy game.).
You're a boy who has a spirit trailing behind him. You use the spirit to help you fight other spirits, but the whole time your spirit is trying to get you to do bad things. You can ignore him, or not, so I guess you can be good or bad in the game.

I didn't get much more out of her than that. It sounds like a cool game, though, at least potentially. So, does this sound familiar to anyone?

Could be wrong since I've never played it yet, but that story made me think of Dark Messiah. No idea if it's an RPG, but going by descriptions on the net it's story is close enough I think to what you described.

That sounds more like Okage on the PS2 than anything I can think of on the PS1.

I just realized also I meant to say Messiah, not Dark Messiah. According to a Gamefan issue Messiah was planned for PSX, looks like it never came out though, but it's on PC and DC...
