Just recieved my top loading nes which is pretty cool but i notice it's very finicky with playing games. If i hold the reset button before powering it on then it will boot games but if i don't it takes a few times to get a game to boot.Any one else with a top loadeing nes have similar problems?

i have two that work perfectly, i'm guessing it's got something wrong with it, you might take it apart to see if anything is loose

Compared to the older model it is a masterpiece of reliability. The only problem I've ever had with the newer NES is that it doesn't work with the Game Genie.

I can't stand the lines in the screen on my top loader. Thats why I plan on getting a AV mod done soon.

I've got two and love them. Until I can get around to doing an a/v mod that will take care of all video problems, what I did was get out an old vcr with great video circuitry and put an rf to rca plug on the antenna rf in and then ran a rca 3 male cable to my a/v switcher. RCA had yellow, white and red male tips on both ends and the picture looks great. No lines or interference on the picture at all. A quick and easy fix for now. Just a suggestion to do if you have the things just lying around till you can do the a/v mod. You can also use the RF Switch if you don't have the other stuff. Good luck.

First and formost, give the thing a through clean. The NES-101 is far more reliable than the NES-001 toaster, but you gotta make sure it's clean. Take a clean cotton t-shirt and a thin flat-head screwdriver or creditcard and jam it into the cartridge connector and move around slightly. You should be able to get out a lot of dust and other gunk. That should solve your problem. If not, take it apart and look for grounding issues. All the reset button is is a power interrupt switch that takes the 5v needed to run the games and throws it to ground, which is pretty much everywhere on the edges of the NES-101.

Check out my video where I address this very problem:

For sure. Like disabling the NES10 in a NES toaster, putting a custom dashboard on an original Xbox or installing a modchip in any model PS2, there's really no reason to suffer with the design limitations of the hardware when solutions to enhance the system are so easy and readily available.

Meh, I never mod any of my systems. I'll do maintenance if something is broken to begin with, like N64 analog sticks.

By the way, if you force the Game Genie into a toploader without any kind of adapter, it will work. It'll be nearly impossible to get out though. I can't imagine it being good for the system though!

Don't do that. Forcing a GG into a toploader is extremely hard on the pin connectors. Unless the idea of desoldering and resoldering 72 individual pins sounds like fun, never force anything into your NES-101 that won't fit.

I recently bought a top loading nes. When I turn on the system with any game in it all that appears on my screen is a completely gray screen. What's wrong with my top loader? Is it fixable? Why does only a gray screen appear.

Clean it. The cartridge connector is probably very dirty. Also clean your games. Use an old cotton shirt + thin flathead screwdriver or creditcard with 99% Isopropanol alcohol. You'll see visible dirt removed and deposited on the cotton shirt. That's what you DON'T want in your retro console!

The toploader may be far more reliable than the standard NES, but it's not some magical piece of technology that's 100% flawless like people make it out to be. It's no different from any other top-loading cartridge-based system like SNES, Genesis, N64, etc., and just as those may sometimes not play a game on the first try, the toploader is no different. Even with my toploader and all of my NES games being clean, they still sometimes take a few tries before they work.
