I'm getting the onlive microconsole so I want to get an ethernet drop near my TV and consoles. Currently my consoles all support wireless, so it hasn't been an issue until now.

My TV signal comes in over my fibre op connection and it's converted to coaxial which then runs through my house. The coaxial signal connects to a motorolla vip 1216 box.

How can I turn this coaxial internet into ethernet?

You have 3 simple options, listed here by price (cheapest to most expensive):

1 - A wireless bridge to your existing network, such as a tomato or ddwrt compatible router

2 - Powerline network adapter

3 - Ethernet over coax (MoCA).

Your Motorolla box should already have an RJ-45 ethernet connection in the back, it's that port labeled 'Network.'

This.

And the motorola box is one used by U-Verse and probably others for TV service. Somewhere you have a gateway that the internet comes in on that has a set of 4 ethernet ports.

It also supports WiFi.

Thanks guys - I saw that network port on the back of the 1216. I tried plugging both the ps3 and xbox 360 into it. Both could connect to my local network but neither could connect to the internet. I'm not sure what to do about that.

I would MUCH prefer to get the port on the 1216 working, but if I can't I think I'll use a powerline networking kit. I was thinking of this one:

It would suit my needs, right?

Probably requires some fiddling with settings on the box, there could be a firewall thing going on. Could be expecting an actual router between the devices and the Motorola box. Dunno.

At this point I am starting to wonder why aren't you giving your service provider a technical support call? They're pretty good at troubleshooting this sort of issue, and capable of modifying your box's settings remotely requiring very little technical skill on your part. The monthly fee you're paying for internet/television/whatever was priced to accommodate the scenario of a customer requiring technical support. Make use of that resource before you buy something.
