Anyone know of any tricks? I've been hard at Shining Force III and I had to recently give my system a break because of how hot it got.
The system is known for overheating and freezing up, or crashing your game in the process. Are there any tricks, or modifications that I can do to help cool the system back down and get it ready for another marathon before I have to go to bed and get ready for work in the morning, or should I put it away for the night, and just hit it again tomorrow?

My friends and I had a couple or more Saturns running for days/weeks straight playing Shining Force III and never ran into any problems. I'd suggest getting a new Saturn.

Which model of Saturn do you have, and on what surface do you have it sitting? I've played my Saturn for 10+ hours on a great many occasions without turning it off and it has never gotten overly hot or done anything out of the ordinary. Basically, I've never experienced it having any problems beyond what any other system might encounter from extended play - it doesn't get nearly as hot as the Dreamcast. Is it really that known for having extraordinary issues? I've never heard anything like that mentioned before.

The Saturn runs so quietly I've left it on for days accidently.

I'm still using my launch Saturn and I don't remember reading that on the Saturn forums. It may be time to grab a new Saturn.

This is a first. The Saturn is one sturdy beast. I also second to buy a new Saturn.

In lieu of getting a new one, why don't you just, uh, not marathon your games? :P What's wrong with just playing till you hit a save point and continuing later? Hot electronics generally cool down pretty fast once off anyway, so give it 15 minutes and you'll probably be good to go.

Bucket of ice water... oh, did you mean "add have it work afterwards"? :)

I've never had any problems like this with my Saturn. The only odd thing I've had happen is in the winter I've sometimes had a static shock happen when picking up a controller and having my finger over one of the screw holes in the pad. This just makes the console reset though.
But yeah I've never had it overheat, it does get a little warm on the side of the Power Supply, but that's it.

I have and have had literally dozens of saturns and never had one over heat. What part is getting hot? How do you know it is overheating? The only thing I can think of is if the internal power supply is over heating. You could swap one out of a broken saturn of the same model (very easy to do), or get a new saturn. They are pretty cheap.

Make it take a shower, especially the miscolored ones from smokers' homes. Those filthy beige gaming toaster ovens...

What works best for me is I start talking about my 360 and how much bigger it is. Normally mentioning how small it is will cool it down really quickly.

The only thing I can think of is that if it's a japan Saturn, it may be hot due to it getting ~120v instead of ~110V from the AC power. Even then, it shouldn't make much of a difference.
Maybe your Saturn has some worn out components in the power supply.
Wise acre response: A Class C fire extinguisher or liquid nitrogen - both make for quite the show!
More practical response: A healthy helping of sodium bicarbonate or dry ice sprinkled below and on the Saturn
Even more practical response: Heat-dissipating metal shelving

The cartridge port will also accept icecream sandwiches.
I have heard of Saturns overheating but never experienced it myself. Just "glue" some copper or aluminium sheets on the VDP chips (SH-2s aren't the ones going hot)

Dump a bucket of water... oh, that joke's been done already. Huh.
I still have the same old Saturn that I bought back in 1996 and never had any problems with it overheating - are you sure yours didn't collect any dust or has a faulty fan? Open and clean it up, make sure it has some "breathing room" (put it on the floor while playing instead of keeping it in a drawer for example), and everything should be fine.
Never heard of the Saturn to be known for overheating or freezing - Mine only froze once, and that was because of a damaged demo
disc...

I'm sure it's just a coincidence, but my Saturn also froze up during a long session of SF3. I lost all my data. I gave it up in disgust.
I suppose I'll pick it up again soon.

Could have sworn I read a few Amazon Saturn game reviews mentioning the system overheating during prolongued sessions, should've known, nobody there ever knows what they are talking about.
Yeah I may need a new system. Pretty sure the fan is not working because this thing gets real hot.
Pretty sure the lens on the system is shot as well, it's pretty old.
All of these problems really arose about 6 months ago when I tried expirimenting with the swap trick. I tried, and tried with no luck for an entire night to get a burned CD-R backup copy to play via the Swap Trick, to find out that there is something wrong with the CD burner on my computer.
My Saturn worked like new before that night, but ever since it just wasn't the same. The system started having trouble reading discs, and would often go Dreamcast on me, and stop playing and go to the Saturn dashboard midgame:onfire:.
Before I got Shining Force III about a week ago, I never really played the system for over an hour at a time. After a few hours of that heavenly masterpiece of a videogame, I noticed how hot the system was and grew concerned.
Looks like I will be in the market for a new Sega Saturn.
Lol, I actually considered sitting the system on a big bag of Ice with a towel over it last night. Shining Force III is a great game.
The only odd thing I've had happen is in the winter I've sometimes had a static shock happen when picking up a controller and having my finger over one of the screw holes in the pad. This just makes the console reset though.
I have had that happen with my NES a few times.
