Being the Shinobi fan that I am, I am pretty excited about this. Sadly, I do not own a 3DS, and probably won't until they cost some $30 ten years from now since I don't really care much about it. But, I'm pretty motivated to get one now.
From what I can see, it's look pretty good. I don't know why it has 3D. It seems unnecessary, especially for a sort of retro reboot.
Anywho, does anyone think this'll be good? Are the guys making it, Griptonite, known to make good games?

Color me cautiously optimistic. Nice. If they get the control right, and don't staple some awful story to it, this could be awesome.

I would be excited, but this is Sega we're talking about. I know better.

Aw man, I love Shinobi. Used to be one of my favorite games on the Sega consoles.
I'll probably never get a 3DS though so I don't think I'll ever get the chance to play this one.

Grappling hook. 'Nuff said.
Why 3DS? Because SEGA is an early-adopting company, and handhelds are cheaper for which to develop.

When I saw the title of this thread, I immediately thought of this old TV ad...

Actually, every time I read or hear anything about Shinobi I think about that ad. LOL

SEGA actually returning to an old IP? INCONCIEVABLE!
I'm not a fan of the graphics as they are in that teaser trailer, but the gameplay looks good.

Looks terrible
The Shinobi franchise is kinda like Star Fox to me. Both have one truly amazing entry (Shinobi III and SF64, respectively), and everything else is solid or crap. If this is a continuation of SIII I'm on board once I pick up some version of 3DS.
The last Shinobi title I purchased was for GBA, and it sucked total asshole. Fingers (and asshole) crossed.

Dude, what? I don't know about the GBA game, but all of these Shinobi games are fuckin' awesome:
Shinobi (Master System)
Shinobi Silent Fury (Game Gear)
Shadow Dancer (MegaDrive)
Shinobi Legions/X (Saturn)
Shinobi 2002 (PS2)

I like me some Shinobi as much as the next guy ... but
Legions and the 2002 PS2 game are "fuckin' awesome"?
We'll just have to agree to disagree on those.

Wasn't really interested in Shinobi on the PS2. This release doesn't really interest me. I'd much rather see Shenmue and Shenmue 2 HD and then Shenmue 3.

I liked the Shinobi games on the Genesis, but the other ones weren't that great. I have Shinobi for the NES and the GBA version of Revenge of Shinobi, the NES one was somewhat decent but the GBA version was awful and boring. The new games don't really interest me, I'll wait to see what the reviews are like.

I figured someone would call me out on Legions. I know it's goofy as all hell, but if you look past the ridiculous live action sequences and the digitized graphics, it's honestly a really solid platformer. I think the cheesy live action sequences make it more enjoyable honestly because they're so hilarious.
As for Shinobi PS2 yeah I'll give you that one. It's nothing too impressive but I found it to be an enjoyable Japanese action game.

Legions was allright, at least the first few stages I played.
Then again, I'm a helluva lot more tolerant of FMV than most people in this forum. XD

The Genesis and GameGear Shinobi games are great, but I didn't like the PS2 game much, and never got a chance to play Legions.

The GBA one isn't very good, but it was produced under a deal with THQ that basically let them use whatever Sega IP's they wanted for GBA games. Sega had almost nothing to do with it. I thought the PS2 one was quite good; but the sequel (Nightshade/Kunoichi) not as much. Everything else was awesome except Cyber Shinobi.
In any case, this kind of reminds me of Ninja Five-O. Which is an amazing game.

Shinobi III is the only one I'd consider to be "fuckin' awesome." But that's not to say some games on your list aren't solid in some way.

I usually try to stay positive, but this game looks absolutely hideous. Unless ugly is now an art style. Maybe it is very very very very very very very early in development?

Fool! Deception is an art of the ninja! For while this game appears "ugly," it is merely hiding its true nature and can strike from the shadows AT ANY MOMENT!
JC Fletcher of Joystiq has written a new preview of this 3DS Shinobi game (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/16/shinobi-preview/), still in development:
Many [Juro] Musashis met their deaths at my inept hands. Even ninja magic didn't help. Juro has a selection of magic spells, including lightning and fire; I cleverly thought I could use the invincibility spell and just chain up to the spiked part of the ceiling.
A couple of [...] events also bring back memories of old Shinobi games while keeping things fresh. The first-person "throw shuriken at a bunch of ninja" game is back, though now it uses touchscreen controls in an odd echo of the shuriken game demonstrated in Nintendo's Wii U video. I was told that button controls might be added for that as well. Another interstitial sequence had me riding a horse, jumping over felled trees and taking out other equestrian ninja, like the dramatic second stage of Shinobi 3. But in this version, the perspective is a tilted 3D view, riding into the screen for maximum 3D-ness. This also allows Griptonite to add multiple planes of obstacles, so you have to steer left and right while jumping and fighting.

I don't know why it has 3D.
I think sidescrollers are perfect for 3D because it adds depth to the backgrounds. Before now, the depth effect was achieved only through parallax scrolling.

Considering that 3D support is mandated unless you're releasing a classic Game Gear, Game Boy/Game Boy Color, or TurboGrafx-16 game on the Virtual Console, that's a pretty good reason for it to be 3D.
I think the video of it that I watched looked pretty poor.

That is an absolutely terrible port of Shinobi. You should try the Sega Master System version, or better yet, the unlockable arcade version in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.
This game does not look all that good to me either. I am a huge fan of the series, but I will not be picking up a 3DS for this title.

It comes out in September, so maybe it will look better then.
Looks like Dave Tach from Joystiq's review department liked Shinobi 3DS pretty well.
Even given its extra dimensions and fancy touch-screen magic controls, this year's Shinobi adheres to the conventions and tropes of the era that produced its forebearer. It is not groundbreaking but iterative, fulfilling its role in the way that everybody in the 8 and 16-bit eras fantasized future games could.
It is also a death trap. Although the difficulty settings range from Beginner to Very Hard, it's far more useful to think of them ranging from Very Hard to Seriously!? As enemies wait patiently for your arrival at house right, you're compelled forward by the allure of things to stab. Equipped with a sword, throwing knives and, because this is a game featuring a ninja, element-based magic spells. Magic makes success marginally more likely, so using it counts against your end-of-level point tally.
Oh, yes, there are points. There are points everywhere. You earn them for every blow you deliver, every block you execute and from items found in ubiquitous wooden crates. You lose points for pretty much everything else.
He gave "Shinobi 3DS" 3 stars out of 5 (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/22/shinobi-3ds-review/).

love shinobi games even though I suck at them. I plan on getting a 3ds eventually and will pick this up when its cheap just to torture myself. Saw some cool stuff about the game on a show called the live show on crunchyroll.com
I saw this at gamestop.
anyone buy it yet?
Chistmas GET!
Shinobi for 3DS is even more than I hoped for. Seasoned gamers, play this on hard mode and live the dream! This is truly a game for those tired of the talky games with leisurely difficulty curves. And don't let the reviews fool you: this game is not super-crazy-difficult. I'd say it is like the Genesis/SNES era's level of difficulty - not arcade punishing, not modern pandering.
ProTip: Play on Hard difficulty and with 3D off. Hard mode for the joy of the challenge (3 lives, 3 continues, only temporary saves); 3D off so that as the handheld tilts from side to side as you deftly jump and attack you won't lose sight of what's happening or the tiny kunai flying at your throat from all directions.
