Out of nowhere, my Sega Master System gamepad button 1 (Start) has stopped working. I've been told these pads were of poor quality. Any ideas of how to fix it or is it DOA?

Possibly stupid question, but IMO worth asking because the same thing happened with my up button and cleaning the controller port is what fixed it: Is controller port 1 completely clean?

Never had that happen to me. They have become sticky, though.
Try and open the controller and clean the contacts, even the rubber parts. If there are any resistors, check to see if they have resistance.
