View Full Version : Homework: Organize/Sort through your collection(s)

I've been on a cleaning kick this and the past weekend. It takes me days to clean/organize something that it would take my other half a few hours, tops, to. I think it's because I'm wired to over-analyze, so I organize things as I go rather than presort then organize after.

It takes a little longer than I like, but it's always a good time when I finally get things sorted out because I have a better idea of what I have/don't have in my collection that I may have forgotten about, or put in the back of my mind. I've been clearing out a lot of superfluous acquisitions lately, mainly things that I got for free, or in mixed lots, and making a few pleasant discoveries as well. We have a huge garage sale every 4th of July which I unload DVDs and a few games at; typically whatever games don't sell on eBay (there's an Independence Day parade and vender booths in town every year close to our house).

In any event, for those of you who have totes and boxes and crates, and especially loose shit overflowing in closets and corners, now's a great time to sort all of that stuff out. It's summer, which is peak yard/garage sale time, and even eBay and Craigslist season, since kids are out of school and have grass cutting money to blow. You never know, you might just unearth something interesting that's worth talking about that you didn't remember you had.

Your homework assignment is to sort through your collection. Organize the stuff you wanna keep, and get an empty box and fill it with everything that you have no use for, and get rid of it. Maybe take a picture of the refuse lot for kicks, if it's a lot of stuff. Even if it's stuff you deem unsellable, I guarantee there's someone willing to take it off your hands for shipping. Quality always trumps quantity (for non-completests); I promise you'll feel better about your collection once you do a little weeding.

This can easily be done. :)

You make an excellent point, EM. There is plenty of gaming cruft that accumulates in people's collections and this is a prime time of year to get it out of there. After all, it is less to track, clean, and worry about, and removing it makes the rest more noticeable and nice looking. :)

I've actually been doing this bit by bit these last two or three weeks. I got serious about it tonight, separating the stuff I'm going to put up for trade or sale from the stuff that's too worthless to get rid of or that's actually worth something.

I also offered to give away some of this stuff at GameTZ. A few people complained about the shipping but I'm going to send a lot of stuff and I'm not shipping media. :P

Prior to Christmas is when I try to clear out as many dupes and unwanted items as possible, both through selling and with Secret Santa. As for organization, I can't do anything about the scattering of items at the moment, but I do keep things alphabetized and as orderly as possible given the storage spaces I have to work with.

But right about now I should get to dusting everything.

DP should totally do a summer swap meet thing on the forums. Everyone list stuff you have and stuff you want, and massive trades ensue. That'd be neat.

That's a very interesting idea, summer cleaning?

Also, most of my collection is organized save systems, but I simply don't have enough space to line up everything in the way I want it to. Not enough shelves and whatnot. Perhaps when I clean off the bookshelves in my room...

Is that different than what already happens with the Swap Shop?

Just thinking of some sort of "big event" version, I guess.

It could work, but how about a giant swap meet in person for DP members to travel to? I know that's what another forum I'm on does, they rent some space and set up a meet for people close to Toronto at least once a year. There was one for Ottawa a few years ago, it just depends on who decides to set one up. There could probably be a few set up across America for the various members here as everyone seems to be spread out.
