I just started a campaign on the DC version of Smash Pack and twice I've saved at the church, only to start up later and find the game has no record of my campaign. Has anyone else played this game on the Smash Pack and dealt with anything similar?

... Shining Force is on Smash Pack? I didn't know that, and I own the damn thing. >_>

It is, but the Genesis sound emulation ruins it. Only Sega Swirl is worth bothering with on it and is the only retail release for that puzzle game (Although it was included with several demo disc). I'd love to say Virtua Cop 2 was worth playing, but it didn't seem to have lightgun support as I recall, so it isn't even terribly worth bothering with.

Here is the lineup

Altered Beast (Genesis)
Columns (Genesis)
Golden Axe (Genesis)
Phantasy Star II (Genesis)
The Revenge of Shinobi (Genesis)
Shining Force (Genesis)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis)
Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis)
Vectorman (Genesis)
Wrestle War (Genesis)
Sega Swirl (Dreamcast)
Virtua Cop 2 (Arcade)

Just had a couple of questions. When you start up again, is it accessing the same memory card it saved on? Also, do you have trouble saving any of the other Smash Pack games on the disc?

You actually have to jump through an extra hoop to save the game. You save in the game itself and then you have to jump to the Sega Smash Pack menu and save that. I think what happens is the rom creates a save but only in RAM. You have to save the actual Sega Smash Pack data in order for the rom data to save to the VMU.

That's ridiculous.

This.

Might as well have the game save the emu state then save the smash pack simultaneously.

I don't remember the process of saving, but I played through all of Shining Force and Phantasy Star 2 on the Smash Pack with no problems (yeah, bad sound emulation, yadda yadda yadda, but if you've never played through the games before, it's no big deal).

That's the most ridiculously overcomplicated crap I've come across in a console game in awhile. Smash Pack has gotta be one of the crappiest efforts at porting old games to a new and perfectly capable system, ever. Think I'll just have a go at Riviera on my GBA instead and come back to this one when I have more patience

I wouldn't go that far, I mean, it's essentially Steve Snake's KGen98 emulator ported to the DC and officially released.

Having to return to the menu for the SRAM save to write to the VMU is something that all Dreamcast emulators require - officially licensed by Sega or not.

Or a desperate way to attempt to sell hardware before a price cut?

Which light gun did you use? It definitely has lightgun support (I played it quite a bit with the MadCatz Dreamblaster), but the Interact gun didn't work (I heard somewhere that it only works well with HotD2). I heard it's one of the only US DC games that doesn't block out the official SEGA gun. I also heard that some TVs just don't like lightguns, so I wouldn't assume they don't work just becuase they don't work on a single TV.

Didn't the Sega Smash Pack come AFTER the price cut? I remember the new low price and the Smash Pack being the reasons why I finally picked up a Dreamcast. The standard unit was marked down to $100, and the Dreamcast packaged with the Smash Pack debuted at $120.

Unless my memory of it isn't as clear as I think it is.

I guess I was a bit too harsh in my earlier post. It's just that I already had my main character and Luke the Fighter up lv 3 after blitzing through the first two battles, and I was feeling pretty good about my campaign. Then, poof! It disappeared

I'm not sure. I remember it coming before with the price drop to $9.99 coming after. My memory may be foggy, though.

I think that's pretty close to how it went. I didn't buy a Dreamcast until the Smash Pack release (and because the Dreamcast Daytona USA release was on the way). I know the regular Dreamcast system package was $79.99 not too shortly after though. If I'm recalling correctly we only received four total systems with the Smash Pack before we got DC hardware dumped on us by the pallet - to be marked down shortly there after.
