after something like 15 years, i finally, FINALLY beat this game!!!!

lol now after riding out my adrenaline high, i realized its all downhill from here, i cant think of any game from that era that could honestly compete or give me a similar experience

flashback comes to mind kinda, but not much else, can anyone recommend me something along the lines of the opus that was comix zone?

Flashback was a completly different kind of game as it's more of an action adventure game, Comix Zone was almost a pure beat-em-up. I guess any beat-em-up would have to do, I can't really think of any other games like Comix Zone in terms of style and multiple paths through each level.

There's a new Comix Zone clone coming out though, it's Unbound Saga.

If you have a PS2 or Gamecube, I think you'll really be able to get into Viewtiful Joe.

How about Comic Jumper? It's a modern game but has some similarities. Plus if you take 15 years to complete it, it will be classic when you finish it. :)

I think this would be your best bet if you want some kind of pseudo similar style.

Comix Zone is very short isn't it?

I've only encountered it as part of a compliation.

Maximum Carnage.

+1 Definitely Maximum Carnage. It was released for both the Genesis and SNES. It is a beat 'em up which offers multiple paths through the game based on decisions that you make throughout. Therefore it is similar in style to Comix Zone and has strong replay value.

^You can be Spider-Man or Venom depending on who you choose throughout the game. Spider-Man is better for some levels and Venom is good for others. The game's narrative changes based on which one you choose at different points in the game.

It's a stretch, but Bugs Bunny Rabbit Rampage for SNES involves an animator who draws the stages (in order to kill you). You have to fight him at the end of the game by spilling all his paint.

I'm actually playing that one right now! Owned it for about six years now and just suddenly decided to give it another go. Definitely the best of the Looney Tunes Sunsoft games for the Snes. Graceful animation (may be the first time I'm not wondering how it would look on the Genesis), gorgeous level designs that are highly inspired from classic episodes and weapons that take out enemies in funny way (like anvils and dynamite dog bones and such). Its only weakness is that enemies are sprawled out everywhere and you can't look up or down.

I'm doing a video review of it right now. I don't like it as much as you do. I do think the graphics are wonderful, including as you said, the animation.

Yeah, honestly, Maximum Carnage is to me everything that I wish that Comix Zone had been when it came out. I love everything about Comix Zone (and truthfully, it's why I bought the Ultimate Collection thing for the PS3), except the difficulty is just a huge turn off to me. I've played it more thanks to the trophies -- which oddly I could care less about on modern games, but put them on old school games and I think they are super fun to try to get -- and I've made it further than I ever have before in it, but I'm not even far enough to get the trophy.

Maximum Carnage I have legitimately beaten and still play it from time to time. I keep a bunch of copies of it in the GOAT Store just because I like to share it with people who really like beat em ups. It's a really tough games at some points, but unlike Comix Zone where I constantly felt like I had no idea what I was doing / how to move forward, you can figure everything out and eventually cruise through the game.

A *way* overlooked beat em up, especially for a game that has SpiderMan in it.

Mickey Mania has a comic book feel, I used to own the SNES version. I know it also came out on Sega CD and Genesis.

Only thing that comes close, experience-wise. For 8/16 bitters, you'll have little chance of getting anything satisfactorily close to Comix Zone.

Maximum Carnage is a great comic based beat 'em up. Captain America and The Avengers on Genesis is alright. Stay away from the SNES one though. Maximum Carnage is better on SNES. That's saying something, coming from me. As a big time Genny fan.

Separation Anxiety and The Punisher are also very good comic based Genesis beat em ups. They both have 2 player co-op as well, I always thought it was unfortunate that Maximum Carnage didn't have co-op. Love the game though. I remember following the Maximum Carnage story arc in the comics as they came out when I was a kid.

I always forget about Punisher... One of the elusive ones for me, at least for cheap.

I remember buying that game day 1 and receiving the bonus CD sound track. I could never beat the boss back then.
