I'm curious, why is the PAL version so expensive? Any clue where I could get hold of a reasonably priced one?

All regions of the N64 Conkers is expensive. US is $40 without case or anything.
You might get lucky, and find one for a reasonable price. My cart only Conker's was just £1.50 from a car boot sale, places like that are your best bet. Mostly you'll just find scratched up and/or bootleg psx games, but very occasionally something decent will turn up.
Lazy option: try "wanted" threads on internet forums.

They go for about that in pounds over here. I guess if I want to get the little gem i will have to foot a bill larger than my console.

Erm... It's actually pretty cheap when compared to prices for PAL-Region Conker.
Anyway, most of my friends have bought NTSC-US Conker, although it is more possible to find PAL C'sBFD in the wild in my country. Reason? I can buy Conker NTSC for 100 PLN with shipping. PAL version costs 150 PLN (or even more) without shipping!
But, why Conker PAL is so expensive?
1. It's overrated.
2. It's hard to find (especially on N64) a childlish-looking game with sexual and toilet humour themes.
3. Released in the end of Nintendo 64 lifespan.
4. N64 wasn't in Europe as popular as in the US.
