I've never had any trouble with DC imports before, but the other day I got ahold of King of Fighters 2001 and it seems to freeze up at its "Please Wait" loading screen at the beginning. I use a Gameshark CDX to play imports, but I know the majority of people seem to use the Utopia disc. Has anyone here had a similar problem before with either KoF 2001 or the CDX?
I haven't had that problem, but I would recommend you to use a Pro Action Replay for playing imports. It is nice because, unlike the Gameshark, you don't need to leave any hardware plugged into the Dreamcast controller and you don't need to keep pressing "A" over and over as the Gameshark software does its checks. With a P.A.R. all you need to do is boot the disc, press "A" once, then open the tray, swap for the import game, and close the lid.
Of course the even nicer route would be to install a hardware mod chip to prevent the region checking at all, but that doesn't seem like too available of an option any more. :( All the mod chips that I knew of dried up a long time ago.
As for what homebrew boot discs offer, well, for as much as I am into Dreamcast homebrew and having recorded plenty to discs myself, I haven't ever tried out the homebrew boot discs. Part of that is I am worried that they might boot pirated discs - you see, I also use the P.A.R. as a way of determining if the imports I buy are genuine originals or not.

Some DC games don't play right with boot discs. E.G.G. doesn't boot correctly in my experience, but I'm not too sure about KOF.

I use Codebreaker and it plays KoF 2001 perfectly.

Oops, I meant to write Codebreaker instead of Pro Action Replay. PSony is right, use a Codebreaker: they are really great.
