View Full Version : Why do some 1 disc games come in 2 disc cases (PSX)?

Is there any reason for this or is it just to make the game stand out/look more impressive or something? Some examples:
Carnage Heart
Alundra
Fade to Black
Vandal Hearts
Legend of Legaia

Not sure about all of them, but in many cases I've noticed it happens for games whose manuals were too big to fit in a 1-disc case.

A standard PS case doesn't have enough space in the front for a thick RPG manual, so a double-case is needed.

Has anyone seen the Rockman 8 (SAT) case? It's like a slightly thicker jewel case. I'm surprised they didn't use those.

Interesting bit on the manuals, I had not considered that. Thanks for the input.

A lot of NTSC-J PSX and DC games come in the thick cases too.
I remember buying Wild Arms and thinking that a disc was missing because of the double case, only to read the back a few moments later and figured it out from there.

A few early EA sports games (such as NBA Live '96) were re-released in double jewel cases after the PS1's switch from longboxes to jewel cases, due to the fact that the manuals were pretty detailed to begin with.
F1 World Grand Prix 2000 was also released in a single-disc double case due to its thick and detailed manual.

The Playstation isn't the only console that does this, I've seen it happen with some PC-Engine games as well (Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes I for example).

Indeed it does. I was thrown off because I just glanced at my shelf when I made this post and the case says "1 DISC". I forgot it came with that "Mission Briefing" disc.

True. Street Fighter II comes in a 2 disc case as well. I cracked it open to look at the manual and it wasn't thick in the slightest though...

Luckily, I haven't had to replace any of those custom trays in the front part of the "single double" cases. I guess you could always buy a cheap double size sports game and swap the case.

For some reason the front part of my copy of Alundra won't close all the way. That manual must be one of the thickest of them all.
I got some too, Destruction Derby, Family Games etc....look here:

Maybe it was because some of those games were early releases for the Playstation?

Uh, the question has already been (correctly) answered, haha. No need to start confusing people.
Well, other than the thick manuals, some games came with demo discs or other such discs that weren't a part of the game itself.
As for other systems with double jewel cases for single-disc games, you can add PC-FX to the list too. I'm guessing probably any system that used discs and standard jewel cases probably had to use a double on occasion for reasons other than a 2+ disc game.

It's not the length of the manual that matters, it's the thickness.

My only guess is that the SFII hucard itself was pretty thick and maybe didn't fit right in a normal case.

As did a few 3DO import games that needed the extra space.
While the question has been answered about the thicker manuals, it was also true for games that came with more than one manual, such as Syphon Filter 3. That game came with a regular manual and a weapons manual. They were both normal size and would have easily fit in a single size PS1 cd case but together they were too big for it.
As for the rpg front, I suppose some of them included maps as well as the manuals. This was normal during the Snes days but I'm not sure if it carried on over to the PS1 days since I don't have any PS1 rpg games besides Final Fantasy 7.

A number of PAL Saturn games come in extra thick cases, making them virtually the same size as a VHS case. Oddly it's sports games that are like this.

yes the thick (or multiple) manuals can be one of the cases
sometimes the games came with a demo like PAL Crash Bandicoot 1
for other games there is no apparant reason, but maybe it was because Sony didn't have their own design of box yet back then (PAL)

I remember reading an interview with Vic Ireland (years ago) where he mentions Sony's double case rule that was apparently pretty strict. Working Designs wanted to do single cases with seperate manuals or something like that, but Sony wouldn't have it. Anyone remember this?

There's also the reverse, two discs in a regular thin case. RE Code Veronica for Dreamcast does this, but I can't recall anything for Playstation.
The Playstation isn't the only console that does this, I've seen it happen with some PC-Engine games as well (Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes I for example).
I know of at least two US examples for the Turbo: Vasteel, which comes with a big fold-out map (and has a weird cardboard cover over the case), and Sim Earth, which has a super thick manual. (Might & Magic III might be another one, I'm not too sure.) Oddly enough, both of these games are in actual two-disc cases, meaning they can hold two discs; all the PSX ones I've seen could only hold one, and had a logo or something on the other side.

Off the top of my head, I know The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, Strider 2, and LSD (Japanese game) all came with 2 discs in a regular case.

Some (the first?) printings of RE3 and Dino Crisis came with two discs in a single jewel case (one game, one demo). Some versions of RE2 Greatest Hits had both discs in a regular jewel case too.

I'm pretty sure(but not 100% certain) that Contra: Legacy of War came in both a normal single case and a double cd case. Mine came in a double cd case(with no 3D glasses ironically) but I've seen copies in single cases before. I'm just not sure if any of them were new.

In Cold Blood, is another that came with those odd cases.

The Rollcage Special Edition for PSX also has two discs in a single-sized jewelcase; one is the game disc, the other a soundtrack CD.
It is odd that Sony seems to have required the use of those dual jewels for plenty of games that could have just used a standard 2-cd single jewelcase, why did they do that?
As for games with one disc in a dual jewel, from what I have Vandal Hearts, Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels, Alundra, Alundra 2, Beyond the Beyond, and Yu-Gi-Oh!: Cursed Memories. In all cases, they use the dual jewel because the manuals are too thick to fit in a single jewelcase's small manual space. Alundra 2's manual is pretty borderline, that one almost fits in a single jewelcase; maybe they wanted it to be in the thicker case, so they made the manual just thick enough to require one?
Then there are some that are one disc games with a second bonus disc in a dual jewel, like Brave Fencer Musashi, Persona 2, Ridge Racer Type 4, and probably more.

Does Brave Fencer Musashi count? It's two discs, but the second disc is an unrelated FF8 demo. I just bought a Musashi in a garage sale for 25 cents last weekend but it is missing the entire second tray and has no booklet. The jewel case was really filthy too, so I had to replace it into a new single jewel case. I am probably the only collector out there that has a one jewel cased edition of Musashi in his collection. That is until I can find a proper one in the wild to upgrade with. ;)

It didn't need a big case...Just a Jewel Case that holds 2 CD's

I hope my bumping doesn't annoy anyone, but I find this topic interesting and wanted to bring up Suikoden. Anyone know why that had a double case? There's only one disc, and the manual doesn't seem any thicker than those in most standard cases (like, say, Suikoden 2). It's always seemed weird

Several double cased video games could fit on a regular case but marketing made them double case to have better presence on retail
