Oh, Peter, you crack me up. I think it really went down like this...

"Oh crap, they noticed it was on rails." *Dials up Lionhead office* "Hey, just a heads up, they noticed. No, not how awesome its going to be, how much it SUCKS. NO, I don't know what to do. They keep complaining about it, and its ruining my hyperbolic marketing efforts. Oh, just tell them its not on rails? OK, I can do that. We can fix it later? Yes, it seems he has taken a very narrow view of what being "on rails" means. I suppose he's technically correct that you can choose the speed at which you go through various "situations" and maybe even have some limited freedom as to what order things happen in, but it doesn't change the fact that you can't go where you want whenever you want to and that the enemy is going to react in largely the same way each time you trigger the events.
