I have seen that recently broken ps2 fat consoles have skyrocketed in price? They sell for more than working ones? What is the reason for this?

You know... this has baffled me too. Last year I was collecting broken fat PS2 systems and amassed 11, yes ELEVEN systems that I sold for $300. I occasionally see them cheap at garage sales and the like and pick them up but you really got me as to why they bring as much as working ones.

Broken PS2s going for $35+? What is the reason for this, is there some kind of special piece inside?

Slap a hard drive in, add a network adapter, get a Free Mcboot memory card and boom - Plays backups from the hard drive. No need for the disc drive to work.

I should probably buy a fat PS2 - I already have a network adapter...

I'm going to go for the hard drive idea too. The lazer on my fat ps2 is dead but i still keep it around for playing games off the hard drive, load times are way batter.

But you'd think if that was the case then working ones should be the same amount or more. Yet I can't give away fat PS2s.

I guess we have to start breaking our working ones and throw all the plugs away!

Maybe the auctions are being sly about whats included? Maybe they have the stuff ready to play backups and they're just not admitting it in the auction?

Agreed. Link to auctions in question?

I just sold 2 broken fat PS2's for $27 each with $12 shipping on each. There was nothing sly in my auction and it only included the console and nothing else. These both happened to be part of a lot that I bought, I assumed they'd be almost worthless until I checked the prices.

I assumed they were looking for parts to repair other broken PS2's or thought they could fix them and resell. If working PS2's aren't worth much more than that doesn't really make sense. Oh well, I was happy!

I forgot to mention in my last post one unusual request I got while selling those two broken PS2's. I had listed the model numbers in the auction, but an ebay user specifically asked me for a date code (it's another number on the back sticker of the unit) for my SCPH-50001 unit.

I've done some research on repairing PS2's and have actually fixed a couple. I never recall the date code being of any significance, just the model number.
