Variant collectors, get your wallets ready! Today Nintendo released a retail version of "Wii Play: Motion" for $50 which is bundled with a Wii Motion+ controller... and they sent e-mails to Club Nintendo members who had registered games from previous WM+ bundles. Those e-mails contained redemption codes for an unbundled version of the game for $30 which can be bought directly through Nintendo. Obviously this is going to be a future collectible if the packing for both differ, as the retail bundle one is going to be very common compared to the direct-mail unbundled one.

Oh, and if you are wondering what Wii Play: Motion is as I was, it is a collection of motion-based mini-games which Nintendo collected together from a number of different game developers to release as this compilation.

What makes you think it's going to be any different from the retail version? I would assume that it is just the retail version without the larger cardboard box around it. I guess we'll know in a week or so, when someone receives one.

I ordered one. I'll post when I get it.

Interesting, but I bet that it will be identical to the retail release, just without the box / controller.

I agree and even if it's not, I can't believe a variant of packaging on something that will sell millions on a modern system is going to be in demand from collectors ever. Moreover, they charge $5 shipping and tax in many states, so this is only $15 cheaper than buying a bundle with the free controller. A total rip-off in my opinion.

$30 is way too much for this...it's almost insulting. The whole appeal of Wii Play was the pack-in wii-mote. Which essentially made Wii Play a $10 game. It's hilarious to me that Nintendo can't grasp this simple fact. Either that or they're just being greedy. Seriously...does anyone think 12 mini-games is worth $30 + tax + shipping? Dumb.

Wii Play Motion Game & Wii Motion+ remote bundle = $50 MSRP
Wii Motion+ remote = $30 MSRP
Wii Play Motion Game = $30

Indeed, something doesn't add up here.

Weird, I didn't even get an e-mail about this! There doesn't seem to be much of a point to it though.

And it's not necessarily going to be rare really, after all how many copies of Game and Watch Collection are floating around as it is?

Sidebets that this direct version is just the DVD case that's inside the retail bundle box?

I bet it's not even that. I'm guessing it will be the cardboard slipcover they package WiiSports in these days.

Not interested in the deal or the game. WiiPlay was fun sure, but if it hadn't come out at launch with an extra controller there's no way I'd bought it.

Actually, the Wiimote Plus has an MSRP of $40, although it is often sold for the low to mid $30s on Amazon and other retailers. As such, this really should be a $10 game, not a $30 one without the remote.

According to the digital flyer, you needed to have registered either Fling Smash or the original Wii Play to be considered for the offer. I have neither, hence no email for me.

Toys R Us is having a sale starting on Sunday where if you buy the Wii Play Motion bundle, you can get the Flingsmash bundle for $10. So, for $60, you get two Wiimote plus controllers, and two admittedly small games. Seems a lot better than $35 for just the mini-game compilation.

Hey All,

Got in my copy. Looks like it's the sealed DVD case that's inside the bundle. It does have a barcode, but says Not For Resale above it.

I'll have to take advantage of this. :)

Is this info up at CAG?

*EDIT* Whoops...found it. Good thing too, the sale is this week. I didn't realize you posted that on the 15th. ^^;
