Obscure and not so popular would be better I think everyone has played Tekken 3, MGS, SH and Syfron Filter. Also if the game holds up okay today that would be a plus.

Please help.

That's a pretty diverse assortment of genres to provide recommendations for based on your examples, Ackman, but if we're talking straightforward action games (guns blazing and what have you), some of my favourites include:

- One, a solid 3rd person 3D run-'n'-gun. The first stage has always pissed me off more than entertained me, but once you crack through that, there're some good times to be had here.
- Future Cop L.A.P.D., quite an enjoyable multi vehicle-based overhead actioner.
- Loaded, an simple but decent overhead shooter from early in the PSX's life.
- Machine Hunter, another worthy overhead shooter.

Hmm, not really sure if it qualifies but the armored core series on PS1 was one of my favorites action series. Grab a couple of friends who love tinkering with things and you will have a really good time with that series.

I second Future Cop L.A.P.D. Fantastic game, and great one on one multiplayer! :D

Twisted metal 2 is problably my favorite ps1 game of all time. Me and my friends wasted so many hours blowing each other away in that game.

Oh, and though I haven't tried them myself, the first two Tenchu games are on the PS1. They both have Greatest Hits releases, so at least they've sold well, which might indicate a certain level of quality. If they are anything near their PS2 successors, they're definitely worth checking out.

Syphon Filter: Cheesy and low production values but well liked in its time.
I wouldn't discount all the other popular franchises that got their starts on the PS1, either (Spyro, Metal Gear Solid - well, excluding MSX releases from loong before, Resident Evil and Dino Crisis, Oddworld, and so on).

I played through Spyro for the first time last year and really enjoyed it. I finally got around to Spyro 2 recently and just finished it last week. It is even more fun than the first. I heartily recommend both games.

I also agree with the Klonoa recommendation. I played through the game three times now. I consider it one of the best platformer games of all time.

A great one is Castlevania Symphony Of the Night its fun and the soundtrack is enjoyable and flows greatly with gameplay

The Playstation version of R-Type (Delta) is pretty fun, although I couldn't ever see myself paying full price for it back when it came out.

Fun graphics, short, challenging and glittery graphics for the time. As far as side-scroll shooters go, it holds up.

The first Crash Bandicoot is pretty fun. Simple, but fun. The z-axis perspective makes it novel.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, as someone else said, is probably one of the greatest games for PS1 or any console for that matter. In my opinion, it's the pinnacle of the franchise (an opinion many share, it seems).

Armored core is just a great game, and series. All of them are good, sure some have some downfalls here and there but i have enjoyed all of them. Love em'

Pandemonium!
Monkey Magic
Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey/Exodus - more of a puzzle game, but there are platforming elements to it.

Icarus Moonsight

Ghost in the Shell
Omega Boost

Two of my go-to games for PS1 action.

They're great games, but not exactly related to this topic as it is about action games. But I'd definitely recommend them to anyone. :D

Incredible Crisis is a really good action game (more button mashing action than anything else). Pretty funny game one top of that.

I remember many nights just slinging through match after match with (Masters of of Arena especially) then spending half an hour or so tweaking our mechs and going through more matches. If you get someone who is around your skill and really understands the mechanics of the game you can really play all night without realizing it.

The current generation installments lost that appeal for me a with the overemphasis on "anime" speed and overly complicated schematic design system. I'm hoping the revival will bring that visceral mech combat and engineer meticulous tweaking back.

Back on Topic:
I would also suggest the Ace(Air) Combat and the first Metal of Honor game on ps1 was very good. The first one at least had much less emphasis on shooting everyone then it did sneaking around and gathering intel in many missions. I'm not too sure about the second one since I never played it.

I'll give another vote for Future Cop and Ape Escape. The Parasite Eve games are also worth looking at.

I know that some fans of the original didn't enjoy it, but I thought that Blaster Master: Blasting Again captured the feel of the driving/jumping segments of the original and translated it well to a PS1 era 3D environment.

Fun stuff and while uncommon not valuable if you come across one.

Tail Concerto is my favorite 3D platformer on PlayStation. The Spyro and Crash games are solid too, though.

I love playing Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands on PS1, but you can probably find those games cheaper on other systems. For other classic arcade stuff, the Namco Museum releases have some great games.

Castlevania Chronicles is really good (and Symphony of the Night, but that's an adventure game). For more 2D platformers, there's Mega Man 8 and X4 (some would recommend X5 and X6, but not I).

For shmups, Einhander, Raystorm, and The Raiden Project are good stuff.

I was playing that game just the other day to give it another chance, it's reasonably fun but there's something about the whole thing that fails to compel. The soundtrack's pretty neat, though. One of these days I'll succeed at getting into it.

I've never understood the hate for Blaster Master: Blasting Again either. Seems pretty cool from what I've played. Sure, it doesn't touch the original, but it's nowhere near the travesty that Blaster Master 2 is. It's even better when you consider how low the MSRP was.

I really liked die hard trilogy, I have not played it in a few years don't know how it holds up now but back in the day it was cool.

Die Hard 1 and 2 are still fun. Die Hard 3 is also as good as it was, which wasn't really good at all.
