Need help with a non-working Model 1 Genesis

I've got a model 1 Genesis that I can't get to work. All I get from it is a black screen on the TV. It doesn't matter if I use an RF switch or the composite cords. I know its getting power because the power LED comes on, and the TV is detecting a signal coming from the A/V cord. I also checked the plug and it is working. I went through all the solder points on the board and cleaned up a couple that were iffy, but it didn't help anything. There's also no obviously bad components on the board.

Any suggestions?

Yes and yes. And the games do work on other consoles no problem.

This may sound stupid, but have you tried blowing into the cart connector and cartridge? Time tested fix for this sort of thing, just don't spray spit inside and you'll be doing it right.

Very funny! I have this exact same problem currently (well, kind of). I noticed that by lifting the console up at different angles, I can sometimes seen what looks to be the game but just in glitchy-tv-static-ness form. I tried playing with the wires and connectors and it didn't seem to do anything, yet when i move the console around, it does show some of the game.

Mayhaps a ad solder joint give joints that connect the av out to the board a reflow with the soldering iron

Most joints can't just be "reflowed" to fix them, usually the pad gets lifted off the board over time as I found out with an old SMS of mine. Usually have to do trace repair to get it done permanently.

After remembering about my broken-ish Model 1 from this thread, I decided to take it apart. I couldn't see anything wrong except a lot of dust, like more than normal for some reason... probably from how it was stored before given to me. Canned air and plenty of alcohol on any contact points. I put it back together and it started working flawlessly. :bday:

After trying everything suggested here, I still can't get it to work, so this system is going into the "parts" box. Hopefully, I can use its parts to get one working down the road.

By any chance have you tried it with a Power Base Converter and a Master System game? I have a Korean Mega Drive that sounds like it has the same problem as your Genesis. The only difference is that I can get the Power Base Converter to work with it, at least to be able to play Double Dragon. Also, the only other cart that works is a Korean 30-in-1 that is made up of NES/SMS style games on it.
