So it finally happened. I picked up a PS2 recently and added it to my collection of Nintendo systems, Genesis and Dreamcast (traded in my PSOne towards the PS2). The Contra game was my first PS2 game.
I have a question for you though. Is it possible to plug in a USB controller (for example my Gravis Gamepad Pro) and set that up as the 2nd player controller? Or should I just buy a 2nd controller? :)

You can't use the gravis game pad on Ps2, so it's better off if you buy another controller instead.

It seems pretty unlikely that game developers would add driver support for the numerous USB controllers available just on the off-chance that someone wants to use a Gravis gamepad. And if the driver support isn't there already, you're going to have a pretty tough time getting your PS2 to recognize the device.

You bought a Playstation 2? Is it too late to take it back? Possibly before it self-destructs on you like so many other PS2s have in the past?

Y'know. I've had a PS2 since it came out (and I'm happy to say that I've never had single problem with it). I was wondering what ARE those FireWire and USB ports for?

The Firewire (or "i-link") port is for a cable to connect two (or more through a hub) PS2s together for head-to-head gaming with each player having one PS2 and one television. Gran Turismo, Armored Core, Unreal Tournament, and a few other games supported i-link.
The USB port is for plugging in a Logitech force feedback steering wheel for Gran Turismo, or a mouse and a keyboard for Unreal Tournament, or a Trance Vibrator for Rez. Or for hiding a very small amount of contraband. Oh, wait. Never mind with the contraband thing. That's what the expansion port's for.

You use the expansion slot for hiding your stuff too bargora?

Two things USB related:
(1) Doesn't one of the Arcade sticks claim it can be used on a PS2? It might have a PS2 adaptor though (I can't remember if they claim it can be used on an Xbox/Gamecube as well or not). But I'm guessing it uses the USB connector as well. It's worth *trying* anyway.
(2) Another USB use: Xport. You install software on your PC, insert a disc into your PS2, and connect the two using the USB ports in each. It lets you store game saves on your PS2 and vice versa. Kinda cool.
