For some reason I really enjoy Hard Drivin' on my SNES, Not sure why, Youtube reviews say otherwise, how bad of a game it is. Anyway, I have only ever seen or played this game in the wild arcade, once.
I found it at an arcade, attached to a skating rink. I know the place, next to my hometown, and I was much younger then. I don't know if it was a Hard Drivin' machine, or if there were different models or names. I know it had a clutch (which worked and was awesome) and had like and old-school wood, muscle car steering wheel.
I played it once, 25 cents, BAM! what is this?! My mind was blown. It was so fun! Of course I sucked at it and ran out of time before i got to do anything cool. 25 cents. "Yeah lets haul ass this time!" I crashes a few times but made it further. 25 cents. Same story, keep putting quarters in just getting better and better. At the time i was at the rink' for a friends (or sister's) birthday party. I shouldn't of even rented skates.
Played and played, i would jump around to other machines, they had fucking METAL SLUG and all i had at home was a NES, maybe SNES, wish i had heard of the AES (Kuros) lol. Even with this other games, yes they had other great ones besides that, I would always go back to the Hard Drivin', Race Drivin' or whatever machine it was and play it. Its near to me in that sense that it could just hold my attention. Awesome, then that game got sold or something, and it was gone forever, only played it on that day. Come to find out, I didn't even know it was on SNES until...2 years ago i think. Found it at a old game shop that just had stacks of games, and stumbled across it. It was cheap so I bought it. Left (with a few other things) and went home. Popped that "new game" in my trusty SNES, and started to play.
At first I thought it was shitty, but i still kept playing. FUCK! out of time, lets try again, this time omitting the damn quarter. Kept playing....and playing, trying to get better. Kept playing for a for a good chunk of time, got mad and started to play Killer Instinct, like I always do. I kept the cart around, played it here and there over the past two years when the mood struck, and I always sucked. I enjoyed it every single time I play it though, it is just fun.
Tonight I plug it in because the moment "struck" for me to play that game that I fucking love, but hate so much. I start at the "easy" track to the left. As usual I continue to do shitty. But, I press [START] and continue. Hauled ASS the next time and found it very easy. I thought "wow, am I actually going to do a LAP!!!." Continue driving and make it a lap (my first one in a while), then just play and get around a 42,000 High Score fuck yeah!
Track 2, the stunt track...don't have much to say...It's awesome, but this isn't the track i got my highest score on. I did beat the high score, with surprisingly (i think) about a 42,000 point score. Well, I go to the next track, the "Super Stunt Track", and start. Fucking destroys me, I don't make it to the first checkpoint for at least....8 more games.
Anyway, I keep playing, like i usually do, thinking I would beat the high score, with just about the same score as the others, 42,000. Tonight was different though, I kept that round going for a while, then something flashes on the screen "You qualified for a Championship". Didn't know what this meant, so i kept driving. Ended up going around again and it said the same thing. Still not sure when the championship is coming so i drive faster. Long story short I start screwing around, and couldn't make it quick enough to the checkpoint to continue. I then go to the championship, get my ass kicked by not even making it to the first gate...damn. not too climactic.
It cuts away, i am thinking about a 42,000 point score. Oh was I wrong, 150,000 points?! HOLY SHIT!!! Personal High Score!!!!!!! I input my name, went to take a picture of the screen, because I don't know if it saves high scores, and it flashes away. I guess with this long drawn out story, what I am asking is; How do i view my High score on Hard Drivin? I can't hit "up" and look at them like i can with my KI2 Cab. Do i have to get another high score before i can see my new one?
