When I was younger, not that I am an angry old man shaking my fist at the clouds yet or anything, the allure of the factory sealed new in box big name classic game was something I aspired to own. In fact I did buy several titles over this time of games that were rare used much less factory sealed. These were essentially purchased to be show pieces for my collection.

Over the last few years though, value be damned, I feel bad for the wonderful game inside these boxes. Never having been enjoyed as it deserved when it was new and the system it was for still current. Instead it has sat unloved and unused for many years.

Of course, I have my own copies of these games to enjoy already as it is, so I find myself in a very silly conundrum. It really doesn't make sense to just open up and play these for a variety of reasons, value and already having my own copies being chief ones. The games aren't sentient beings and do not give a crap about being played. Still...

Anyone else have any similar change of perspectives on things like this over time?

When I decide I dont need a particular form of a game, I make sure I sell it so I can afford more games that are the type I do collect. For instance if I could find a good condition CIB Tails Adventure for Game Gear, I would get it and sell my sealed one for maximum possible

I like to open sealed old games, then smell them. It takes me back. Not kidding.

But do you pay $100-$1000 just for one game just to do this?

I would love to do that with some older games, one's i don't own...which is alot.

It just brings you back and puts you in the right mood to play the game

Don't get me wrong some i would keep sealed, but some just need to be opened and played, isn't that what they were meant to do?

Partly collector mentality. Also that beat up copies just aren't as presentable.

From a more practical viewpoint digital titles save gargantuan amounts of storage room, and tolerating incomplete games with some wear/tear allows larger game quantity for the money.

I find there's something of a mystique to games released unsealed. If were to ever enter the real collecting fold, I'd have quite a few such games slabbed to correct their creators' seemingly unusual choice.

Over the past few years I have been shifting away from unplayed games. Not that I think they need to be played just that collecting has lowered itself on my priority list. After 25 years of collecting I would say 50% of my collection is beat up carts that all play fine. I would sell or trade the ones in better condition to increase my quantity. So I think I only have less than a dozen sealed games left. Mostly Intellivision but ultra commons.

If I ever find a factory sealed ColecoVision, I plan on cracking that sucker open and reliving Christmas of '82 when I was 15 years old. Maybe foolish, but it's cheaper than time travel.

Make sure you do it on Christmas. Then you can put a sticker on the seal that says "DON'T OPEN TILL CHRISTMAS"
