Since Nintendo's 3DS launched back in March, we've been hanging on by a thread, counting the minutes until this week's eShop update. And no, it's not just because Extreme Hangman 2 is finally dropping on DSiWare: Netflix's streaming video application will be available on 3DS as well. Finally a chance to bring Agent Cooper on the go and make those smug short-form video users in Europe and Japan quit their braggin'!
Nintendo revealed as much with an early announcement of its weekly eShop, DSi, and Wii Shop updates, also detailing several games that will be available for purchase across the Wii, DSi, and 3DS. We're particularly fond of the Virtual Console Game & Watch Gallery coming to 3DS, but fans of super old-school sports games may be more excited to hear about Baseball being this week's other retro re-release.

I can't say that this is a feature I'd ever use. It reminds me of the TV tuner they use to have for Game Gear and Turbo Express. I also have doubts about the picture quality of movies on the 3DS. Maybe they will provide a free movie sample so I can try it out.

I don't see the point in watching movies on tiny little screens. The whole thing has never been right to me. :P

Kinda hard to complain about this, I mean, if you're a Netflix subscriber it's just another place you can stream movies. I'm not a fan of watching video on a handheld screen either, but IT'S FREE.
Just finished downloading it and it works well. Video is displayed on the larger top screen (in widescreen, in 2D) while the bottom screen simply blacks out and serves as your "remote" to navigate or pause the video.
Thumbs up. Bring us HULU next!

I'm sure the picture quality will be like watching television or a movie on an SDTV, or atleast whatever the highest quality the 3DS has.

Heck just download that Green Lantern 3D movie trailer and that's probably how a 3D movie would look... then shove the slider to 2D and that's how the 2D movie would look for the most part. :p
But then again Netflix varies the quality of the movie based upon bandwidth I think.

Can you search the catalog directly from the 3DS software?
While I haven't tried it out on 3DS I can attest to the fact that the Netflix software for iOS devices is friggin fantastic. I expect that this is easily as good.
Even on a 3G connection it ramps up to really beautiful resolution lightning fast, and you'd be surprised how nice it is to be able to search, and instant play a movie on a device with 3G when/where it may be appropriate (long trip, waiting room, etc.)
Of course, the 3DS doesn't have 3G service, but if you're near a Wi-Fi spot why not enjoy a few episodes of The IT Crowd or LOST?

Why?
BECAUSE WE CAN!
And Netflix pays Nintendo per install.

Just got it.
I was under the impression that it was included in a firmware update but it was just in the 3DS Shop!
It completely locked up after I downloaded it, activated it and tried to access my collection, but after a hard reboot of the 3DS it worked like a champ.
As I suspected, it's just like the iOS software. Great fast streaming and very decent resolution.
Happy to have one more device that can stream ... the only downside being the 3DS's poor battery life ... but with the device plugged in it makes a nice little desktop Netflix streaming device!
