Saw this over at Neogaf:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=437309

Basically Microsoft have registered the domains Microsoft-Sony.com and Sony-Microsoft.com.

This would seem to suggest they are doing something together. Some of the posters are seemingly believing it's a sign that the two are going have a joint console for the 8th Generation, or an agreed standard.

Whilst I can't see that happening, I do see the logic behind the thinking.

Others think it's something to with phones/tvs etc What do DP think?

They're probably just buying up domains so idiots don't register them to make stupid sites that proliferate dumb rumors. Case in point. :P That's NeoGAF for you. As the last poster on the first page says, they own 30,000 domains. I'm sure you'll find many other red herrings in there as well.

... Can companies buy a domain that contains part of a name of another company?

That's the weird thing. I mean, you'd think they (Sony) would sue them for owning one with their copyrighted name on it.

Yes they can.

Semi-related case in point, www.digitalpress.com vs. www.digitpress.com

Basically anybody can own any domain, copyrighted name or otherwise.

If they were to team up, that would be like two blackholes merging. Just think of all that red ink! LOL

Just think about it, the console would ship with AIDS - would cost on parity with luxury line autos - the DRM and copy protection would be a custom power button shaped as a dildo that will fit only into your specific colon... A photo is taken with EyeKinect, to ensure you're actually turning it on using the contractual proper method. No action replay fleshlights for your MSony PoS 420, no sir! What a dream machine!

I figured snark was welcomed because this is just not going to happen, unless someone loses a fiddle throw-down in the South-East US. :D

Sony makes computers with Microsoft Windows on them, hell this isn't even the first time. Check out Sony's MSX computers. Plus Microsoft may need Sony's Blu-ray tech. for their next game system, and may work with Sony. It's business, hell doesn't Bill Gates or Microsoft own 1/3 share in Apple?

The whole reason Sony got in the game console business in the first place was because nobody wants to co-produce a console.

The only thing I'm surprised by is the fact that it took this long for them to do it.

Plus Microsoft may need Sony's Blu-ray tech. for their next game system, and may work with Sony.Sony isn't the only one that holds Blu-Ray patents, there's a bunch of companies they'd have to get licenses from before they could include the technology. So it's not as simple as "Microsoft hates Sony".

I doubt it, but we can always hope :P.

I could see Sony doing it as big fuck you to Nintendo for the shit Nintendo pulled with the SNES-CD add-on called "Playstation" As for Microsoft, they're money hungry and maybe a little pissed that the Wii outsold them. I don't see a unified console coming along, but maybe a Microsoft portable?

They already have Windows Phone.

Or did they kill it already?

Isn't their name trademarked rather than copyrighted?I honestly have no idea - or what the difference between both is supposed to be. :)

Names are trademarked. Works are copyrighted.

During my extended long term research on this matter(whihc took me about 20 seconds) I came across this (http://www.industrygamers.com/news/microsoft-registers-microsoft-sony-domains/).

While everything is nothing more than rumor right now this seems the most plausible:

Current speculation is that Microsoft is planning to do a comparison site to show consumers why it is the better brand

But one thing is for sure, they definitely aren't teaming up to make a single all in one console. They dislike each other too much for that.

I'm too lazy to find the numbers atm, but this statement blows my mind. Outsold even including all of the people who have purchased multiples because their first 4 were hosed by ridiculous problems?

I really doubt MS is all that bothered by those numbers. It's not like they make a killing on hardware, and the XBOX360 has a much higher attach rate than the Wii.
