In all of the time that I've followed collecting web sites, I've never thought to ask this question and I was thinking about it just the other day...

What are your main collection(s)?

In other words, I could say that I collect for the NES and SNES, but I don't really actively collect for them. I keep what I had as a kid and have added a couple other things, but it definitely isn't something that I seek out.

On the flip side, I can definitely say that I collect these:

- Dreamcast (US, PAL mainly)
- Playstation Longboxes
- Atari Jaguar (everything)
- Neo Geo Pocket (US only)
- Earthbound / Mother stuff
- Headhunter stuff
- Metal Gear Solid stuff

I would say that genres can also be collections, as can just about anything -- but we all actively focus I think on certain things, I don't know too many people who go out and buy every single game they see no matter what, so what are the things that you enjoy the most?

My main collection is NES. I am 32 boxes and 19 manuals away from a CIB collection. I'm not really going to bother finishing it as I sold 3 high tier titles (and the box and manual for another) so it'll never be 100%. However, getting a box here and there of what I still need is something I wouldn't mind doing (check my WTB thread (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=152301) in B&S). I have a host of other things for the system, imports, homebrews, accessories, etc.

Otherwise, I'll make a list like goatdan. This is stuff right now I'm passively actively seeking out:

- NES boxes and manuals I need (see above)
- 2600 games (Pretty much got every common games, now working on all the uncommon/slightly rare ones)
- SNES games (primarily to play, fond memories of renting SNES back in the day)
- DS games (MOAR DS PLOX)
- Current gen/last gen limited editions (If they're cheap!)

If a game is cheap enough and isn't a sports games, I'll pick up practically anything, although, yeah, some things I'll be more excited about than others.

In terms of pure numbers, NES, SNES, N64, and PlayStation are the only systems I have 100+ games for. With PlayStation, it's 200+.

In terms of having a special passion for a system, I tend to go for the underdogs. I have a nearly full CIB US Neo Geo Pocket Color set, and I wouldn't mind shooting for full Virtual Boy and PC-FX sets someday since they're small libraries too. If I really wanted to go nuts, I'd go for every N64 game, but for now I'm content hunting down every N64 non-sports Japan-exclusive. Since I'm big on RPGs, I especially gather those as well. I'd like a full US RPG set for PlayStation (by my own definition, of course, since no one can state a concrete number when everybody's genre definition is different). I've made an effort to get most of the special edition RPG releases for PSP and PS2 also.

Beyond that, I collect anything and everything related to tri-Ace's games, and I do the same for a couple other smaller franchises that I adore, like Wonder Project J and Little Tail Bronx. Gathering official video game soundtracks, both original and arranged, is a big part of my collecting too, but that's pretty much limited just to the music I really love (unless I get a phenomenal deal or something as a freebie, seeing as I usually pay at least $20 for an album).

The console I have the most titles for is the Wii (35) but that's only due to have big change in fundage through the Wii's lifespan.

I consider my main collection to be my Sonic titles (over 30) and my Shining Force Collection (missing 3 English and 5 Japanese titles).

I sold off a lot of my collection that was just there for collection. I was able to reduce my library down to the true fan boy stuff.

Neo Geo CD (Going for Complete Import Collection)
Neo Geo MVS (Going for Complete Cart Only Mixed Set)

PlayStation 1 (100% going after last few demos, variants)
Sega Saturn (100% going after last few demos, variants)
Sega Dreamcast (Need 2 games for 100%, then Variants and Demos)
Sega CD (Need about 40 games for 100% , No Variant Collectiing)
Game.Com (100% Complete sans an accessory or two)
NES (11 more games till a 100% complete collection, no variants)
Laseractive (100% Complete US Side Collection)
Turbo Grafx 16/ Duo (100% Complete collection sans a few cardboard boxes)

Other than that, I have all 3 next gens which are strictly for the few games I want on them, and my PS2, which I am collecting the arcade compilation discs for.

I mainly collect for

NES (Not as much because I have a ton and not many interest me a whole lot due to lack of time and no saves) Only looking for fun not necessarily rare games hunting for Ducktales and Kid Icarus at the moment.

SNES (I am going for a bit of both Rare and quality titles as well as buying the hidden gems from racketboy. I've got nearly every rare game on the system just down to Hagane, Lufia 2 and EVO. I'd say it's by far the most expensive of the 3 to collect for but also the best.

N64 (Only getting games I rented as a kid, because let's face it 84.99 is outrageous for a game, I only owned Super Mario 64 and rented anything else. I try to get only CIB games for N64 as it is pricey but I don't want many games from it and not necessarily the rarest titles just the ones I know about or always wanted to play. Also I hate that the carts do not have end labels so I can't really arrange them unless they have a box without some gaudy tape or something.

PS3 (I've had for about a month and I'm up to 14 games not trying to collect for it but it's always a problem for me getting a new console have to buy everything in sight, though I only have a few more to find and waiting on the bigger titles.)

Sega Genesis

Saturn
N64

I wasn't even actively collecting Odyssey2, but I have ended up with every U.S. cart except Power Lords. With regards to Sega CD I was trying to collect them all (almost finished it twice, once in 2000, then again in 2006), but I just don't have the energy (or $$$) to try and get them all again (Maybe re-pick up the rest of the WD games, I already have the Euro version of Keio, so that's good enough for me).

Today, I'll just "collect" the games I'm interested in playing.

Tough one. I collect sort-of evenly across all systems, going for very specific titles rather than bulk lots/100% completion. That said though, my third biggest collection at the moment and the one with the most entries on the 'wanted' list is PS1, so I'll say that top, followed by the GB/GBC/GBA family and either the PS2 or the Mega Drive after that.

Collecting:
TurboGrafx 16 / Duo / PC-Engine (Missing 5 games for a complete TG16 collection)
Sega CD (Missing 6 games, I need a lot of manual/jewel case upgrades)

Not really collecting for these consoles, picking up interesting games:
Famicom / FDS (Around 350 games, and a few Japan-only oddities)
NES (Around 200 games)
PS1 (Around 200 games)
PS2 (Around 350 games)
Saturn (Around 45 games, mostly imports)
SNES (Around 50 games)
Dreamcast/Genesis/32x/ (Around 50 games)

I'm actively collecting full sets for every non-current gen system. I collect all regions with primary focus on NA followed by JP, then the PAL stuff is as it comes. And it's quite difficult for me to not purchase everything on eBay.

I collect for the Xbox 360 and I just started collecting for the DS. But really if it's cheap I'll buy it.

Because it's about collecting video games?

For me it's

US released game systems, whether console, handheld or computer

Cartridges of arcade ports for pre NES systems

Complete in box games for systems NES and on

Specific favorite genres to collect for:
RPGs
Adventures
Platformers
Arcade Ports
Fighters
Puzzles

And most of all, games that belong to favorite franchises like:
Mario
Sonic
Donkey Kong
Kirby
Zelda
Final Fantasy
Dragon Quest
Oddworld
Legacy of Kain
Bust-A-Move
Dragon Ball
X-Men (and to a lesser extent other Marvel characters)
Suikoden
Pokemon

And of course many many others. The list could go on and on all day.

I guess an easier way to say this with a broader term is that I collect games that are in my opinion fun, good ones.

Actively collecting:

PlayStation (about 500 from a set, before variants/demos and the like)
Nintendo DS (cause i'm a crazy fool)
X360 (main system I play, plus I'm a LE fool)
PS3 (system exclusives)
3DS (it'll be my next DS, mark my words)

Kinda sorta collecting
Dreamcast (I've got a 'variant' complete collection, save a Speed Devils variant, I could use the few DC demos, otherwise it's done)
NGPC (Complete US collection, could use to get the NPG 'English' games, and I need 3 US system box variants, if more US clamshells show, then i'll get em, otherwise its a complete set)

Anything else is a grab cause it's 'special' to me kind of thing.

- DS games (MOAR DS PLOX)
MOAR DS!

In no particular order...

-Famicom carts: Not too hard to find good condition CIB and sometimes even claimed-to-be-new games... but a lot of dull games and/or RPGs that far exceed my meager knowledge of Japanese. At least most of the platformers are enjoyable enough.

-Famicom disks: Easy to find provably new games, thanks to the seal = guaranteed complete copies in good condition. A lot of the crappy games are dirt cheap, even new. Plus, I like the unique FDS sounds/music found in some of them.

-Arcade: Most of them work on the easy to learn, hard to master principle, meaning they are great for people with short attention spans. I also like the look of huge PCBs. It is also fun to play the true originals of games that typically only get played as ports or in MAME.

I'd like to start getting more original Japanese GameBoy games, just need to get a new Japanese DMG-01 (and yes, I know there are no region lockouts and that the US/JP models are nearly identical) or get my current one to work better. Dang screen lines. Or just give up and use my pink GB Pocket

I'm always on the hunt for Game Boy but surges in local availability have a lot to do with what I'm actively building on (it's been NES more than anything, lately). As far as more superficial collecting goals, boxed Genesis games (grid pattern) are the bee's knees - few things look cooler lined up on a shelf. However, I'm perfectly happy with a collection that's predominantly loose. I feel oddly apprehensive about playing something when there are concerns over maintaining the condition of a cart or packaging. The fact that my shelves are nearing capacity makes loose Game Boy carts an especially realistic collecting target.

My main primary collections in which I play and collect for, as well as a complete set:

Turbo Grafx 16/Duo (NOT PC Engine, but the USA released games of the Turbo Grafx 16, Turbo CD, and the Turbo Duo Super CD games) - I have all 44 of the official USA released CD games, and I am about 15 hucards from the full official USA released titles, and I already have Magical Chase so my goal is a reachable one, though Bonk 3 hucard seems to be more than I wish to spend, especially as I have the CD game… this collection has been in the making since 1990 when I purchased my Turbo Grafx 16, so I am not in hurry for completion…

I am casually coming closer to having a full USA released games set of the Sega Master System, BUT I sold my USA Sonic the Hedgehog, knowing full well I'd likely never get it again, and wouldn't want to spend what I was paid when I had sold it, I am content with a European version…

Lately, I am also finding myself building my Atari 5200 collection, and I may go for a complete officially released set, but the high tier titles are rather pricey, and difficult to find, so I may never fullfil this…

I only collect the games that I want to play for every system I own, however, I'm a sucker for odd peripherals, and collect the ones that I find cool just for the quirk factor. Things like the Onimusha 3 Soul Controller, the Resident Evil 4 chainsaw controllers, the Dragon Quest Slime controller, the Power Glove, the Final Fantasy X Tiny Bee controllers (which I don't own, yet), etc.

I also collect inexpensive statues, models and plushes of characters I like, so long as they look cool. I only have a few things like that because I'm very particular, and don't want a room full of that sort of shit. I also have my favorite series, mainly survival horror games that I'll purchase practically anything for, especially license items. Things like those promotional newspapers for Silent Hill and Resident Evil that were given away at theatres, I have a Resident Evil Outbreak File#1 flashlight/toolkit, several posters, etc..

I mainly collect practical stuff that I can use, like game themed wallets, t-shirts, and messenger bags; things of that sort.

Oh, and I really like Special/Limited Edition variants of consoles. They're usually the ones I have set up in my gameroom, like the Gold Nintendo 64 (Toys 'R' Us exclusive), Green HALO Edition XBOX, Red Resident Evil 5 XBOX360, HALO Edition XBOX 360, 25th Anniversary Wii, etc..
