Banjo Tooie question (for beginner)

Hi, I got a copy of Banjo Tooie for N64 and I have a question. There are save files already on it, and I am playing someone's save file who's near the end of the game.
I've never played the game before, I plan on going back and playing the whole game through myself, but for now, I'm just exploring a bit.
Anyway, I noticed I have a green pterodactyl type bird in my backpack. How do I switch back to the bird named Tooie in my backpack?

You have to go in the wigwam near the entrance to the amusement park level and jump in the pool.

For the record, the bird's name is Kazooie. The game title being "Banjo-Tooie" was to imply that it's "Banjo-Kazooie 2", but in an unusual way
