If the booklet of an NES game (Battletoads) does not state the number of levels in the game, and I UNINTENTIONALLY find out how many levels there are, have I cheated by having that knowledge?

That wouldn't be in my definition of cheating as it's not helping you beat the game in any way. Does knowing there is 8 worlds in a Mario game (like most of them) help you in any way?

There are 9 worlds in Super Mario Brothers.

What did you? You been reading Battletoads spoilers online?

Here's exactly what happened. I had been playing Battletoads. I looked up a list of the hardest games on NES on a forum, and someone said they got to level 12. I checked the booklet and it didn't state the number of levels, so I got mad and felt I had information I shouldn't have had. So I looked at advertisements from the original game to see if they said how many levels there were. One of the ads said that there were 12 levels. This made me feel better, because it let me know that the number of levels was not a secret after all. Then I went on google video and looked for old commercials to see if they said it in commercials too. A title of one of the videos said "Level 13 Final level Dark Queen" That made me upset again. Sheesh. Should I care about this? I am VERY OCD. I actually have it. Let it be known that I did not read any walkthroughs, use any codes, or learn of any strategies. I merely know how many levels there are.

Knowing there are 3 rounds in Jeopardy doesn't give you an advantage. You haven't cheated because you've gained nothing by what you've found.

Here's a secret. The Sega Genesis version of Battletoads has better graphics than the NES version. If you play this version first, then you're cheating on the NES version and it will be very jealous.

I'm sorry Battletoads NES; the Genesis version is just so much prettier than you are. It's not me; its you.

Platoon. Platoon is the hardest game on the NES.

Yes, but that's playable and a well designed and interesting game. Platoon just says "fuck you" right at the start and never lets up.

You can't ask other people if you're cheating unless you're playing by others' rules, or your in-game actions have a negative impact on others' enjoyment of the game...are you in an NES-game-beating tournament or something? If you're playing games for your own enjoyment, or a sense of personal accomplishment even, then you only cheat when you do something which would thwart your own sensibilities regarding your own enjoyment of the game. Which, maybe you've done this, but how would we know?
Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about this one...I know you said you have OCD, but even so I would say: try not to worry too much.

I've gotten to the encampment. No idea how far into the game that is.

For any other game, it might be cheating. For battletoads, you need all the help you can get.

Nope, not cheating, you are innocent and relieved of all charges.
Good luck beating the game though!

Why would you care if you "cheated" at a game? Wtf?
