I like it, but a few questions. My comments are on the podcast only, not the video version which I have not had time to watch. Do you use multiple mics or just 1? Some things were a bit muffled when I listened in the car, and certain voices dropped off at times.
Other than that, I enjoyed it! I seem to enjoy the talk about interesting stuff traded in to the store the most, please keep that up.

They just used a camcorder, so it was only one microphone. It seems the trade-ins portion is definitely the most popular part of the show!

Hey gang!

We're looking to incorporate some community-content-powered questions into The Digital Press Podcast, so if you have a question about anything gaming related be it classic, modern, topical of-the-moment gaming news, or if you'd just like us to comment on some rumors or your own speculations - post it here and we might read it on the next episode!

YOU CAN EITHER SUBMIT YOUR QUESTIONS IN THIS THREAD OR YOU CAN EMAIL THEM DIRECTLY TO:

digitalpresspodcast@gmail.com

You can also follow us on Twitter here:

http://twitter.com/#!/TheDPpodcast

and tweet your questions/comments to @TheDPpodcast

This is your chance to contribute, so be random! Be creative! Show us what you've got!

If you're going to submit them in this thread, let's keep the thread as non-conversational as possible.

Even if somebody posts something that you'd like to comment on, do your best to leave it for us to discuss on the show.

Thanks!

So far we've only had one mail-in question from a friend of the forums:

"Which member of the DP Webcast team would win in a brawl to the death?"

While we certainly wouldn't mind questions of a more serious ilk, we're not above answering something as "fun" as that.

So, let that set the stage for some questions from the community! Fire away!

PODCAST EPISODE 2 WAS RECORDED SUNDAY 8/7/2011 SO ANY QUESTIONS SUBMITTED HERE WILL BE FOR THE NEXT RECORDED EPISODE.

With the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3 and the resulting fan campaigns to get Capcom to reverse its decision (http://legends3.com/), what are your thoughts and how does this affect the future of fan interaction and community-contributed ideas? With over 40,000 people joining the Facebook campaign, can enough fan effort change Capcom's choice on MML3?

Now that we've seen all of the Big Three's motion controllers (Move, Kinect, and Wii Motion Plus), what has this outing's response been and how does this bode for the next set of consoles (Wii U and its competitors)?

Nz17

"Sonic Generations," the new Sonic game due for release this year, is supposed to be a celebration of the past twenty years of Sonic gaming. For the console (PS3/360/PC) release, this is going to cover games from the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) though to today's consoles.

For the 3DS release, this is going to cover... only the Nintendo handheld games developed by Dimps. That's Sonic Advance, Advance 2, Advance 3, Rush, Rush Adventure, and Colors. There will be no representations of the Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Nokia N-Gage, PSP, or non-Dimps GBA & DS games.

Is it right to call Sonic Generations 3DS a celebration of the last twenty years of handheld Sonic games when in fact over half of those games and platforms are not represented?

Just wanted to drop in and apologize for the delay on Episode 2.

In the process of getting better audio/video equipment to aid in the listen-ability of the cast and the unthorough testing of that equipment we wound up with some near-catastrophic post-production problems that could not be worked out in a timely fashion.

However, based on what we thought was over-all a rousing episode/discussion we're working on (slowly) making the necessary corrections to the audio/video and getting the episode up (much MUCH) later rather than sooner.

We've also made a decision to get raw audio up for listening within a 24-48 hour period of all future recordings.

So, thanks for your continued interest, I believe that we'll be able to get over these minor growing pains and get some consistent product out there on a very regular basis.

Stay tuned!

Ok, computer has been busy encoding this monster of a second episode since very, very early this morning (or I should say extremely late night for me). As soon as it's done, I will upload and then you can all enjoy. Rock!

P.S. For those wondering what it was like when the decision was made to get audio version up within 24/48 hours. It went a little like this (group of Joe, Frankie, Mike "tonythetiger") all talking about getting audio up quickly after recording. Yes that sounds like a great plan, they all cheered. Happy mob then turns to me and says "Mike get it done!"

A good episode gentleman. I enjoy the candid conversations that you all have, its nice to see and hear opinions that are coming from you off the top of your head vs. something scripted. I do think that the tales from the store segment should be extended a little bit, I could see it being something a lot of people who don't actually get to go to Digital Press really enjoying.

Nz17

What I would like is for there to be musical interludes between segments and for the backdrop to change by segment. The arcade machines are great, but seeing them for the whole duration of the show was tedious. Also, the musical cues will let audio-only listeners know in another way when segments change.

For example, each time you switch to another show segment you could play a power-up sound effect. 1UP mushroom, Sonic ring, you name it. You could even have a different one each time.

For the visuals, just rotate around. Start with the arcade machines, then the island in the middle of the store, then the game racks, perhaps the display cases afterward, and finally (for the last segment) the exit of the store.

And try to get those lapel mics higher up! They're called "lapel mics" because they're supposed to be situated on the speakers' lapels (or near a shirt equivalent location). Joe and some others sounded fine, but Frankie's mic was too far from his mouth and thus he was difficult to hear.

killersquirel
09-12-2011, 10:38 AM
That's a great idea about the musical interludes. I had a some technical problems with the mics this episode, and had to do lots of work in post to "correct" them. Hopefully the next one won't have those problems.

Awesome!

Kinda unrelated but I forgot to ask after the previous episode, got any details on the (assumed) MAME driving setup in that Pole Position cabinet? Being a person that MAME'd one myself at one point, I'd love some information. Looks like it uses a four position reverse N Atari shifter instead of the standard single button hi / lo.

Stonic made that masterpiece if you have any technical questions.

I do believe it is a 4 way N shifter (it's 4 way for sure ... the "siren" buttons are mapped to the thing in A.P.B. and interrogations are a serious stick-waggle chore along the lines of a Mario Party mini game).

I had the nitro set like that for Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat / Super Off-Road on my cabinet with the stock Pole Position shifter (which is really single button, only depresses in high gear) and had to perform a similar action for those games. LOL

Great episode! I really enjoyed the 3DS part of the discussion as well as the Tales of the Store segment, which both pleased and enraged me. Pleased me to hear that Joe is a stand up guy and actually called up the people selling off the games from the previous episode, even though I wasn't part of the pitchfork and torches crowd. Enraged because of the minds of "collectors" - collectors in quotes because they clearly bought the game just to have it graded and sell it off for 2k monies.
As someone who has worked retail for quite a few years I can safely say that FACTORY SEALED GAMES (or any product, really) ARE NOT NECESSARILY PRISTINE WHEN THEY COME OFF THE ASSEMBLY LINE! But sure, your refund policy is a noble thing, even if these people were clearly just using it because they figured they wouldn't get a 100 grading on the games.

Sure, this point of view will probably make me look like an ass to most people, but come on, let's not go into the whole grading discussion again. :deadhorse:

Back to the episode, it was definately a step up on the production side from the first episode, even if I'd still like to have the segments divided into their own little video but hey, I'll make a DVD of each episode and just put in chapter starts at each segment, so that's really no big deal.

Also, do you guys take request/suggestions for future episodes? If so, as someone who will probably never have the opportunity to visit the store, I'd like to hear more about the store in general. Perhaps a tour of the store, some thoughts on how (and why) things are placed, as well as what goes into concideration regarding what games you take in and how you price them.

Kid Ice
09-13-2011, 09:12 AM
Can you splice in screen shots or video of the games you are talking about? That would add a little variety...when Mike talks about a game I never heard of ("Shadows of the Damned"?) it would be nice to see what he's talking about rather than you guys sitting around.

On the sealed game thing, I sold a sealed copy of GameCube Twin Snakes over the summer and I will never auction a sealed game again. The bidders were just totally unreasonable. Get a life.

btw I bought the game at a NAVA meeting and sold it for more than twice what I paid. No, I didn't track the guy down to give him more money.

That was the plan for this episode, but unfortunately this episode was a production nightmare. I'm not going to get into why it was a production nightmare, but I can say that the problems I had were figured out and will not be happening again.

I do appreciate all the feedback, and if you anybody is interested in requesting topics, feel free to visit the thread that is stickied in the classic games forum.

One phrase: title cards. I know y'all are probably planning on having them anyway, but title cards at the start of each segment would be super duper uuper.

killersquirel
09-14-2011, 10:18 AM
What do you mean by title cards? I throw in a phrase that goes along with the upcoming segment, such as the phrase "con job" when we spoke of conventions. I think the only ongoing segment is the "tales from the store" which had the title "tales from the store" in the beginning.

bunnybum

Okay, this is going to be pretty much every question/suggestion I can think of that I'd like to see in future episodes (Sorry about the magnitude of this post):

Store stuff:
1. As someone, who will probably never have the opportunity to visit the store, how about a tour?
2. How did it all start? What was taken into concideration when deciding to open a store? What kind of stock did you have in the beginning? How has things changed?
3. What goes into concideration when taking in used games and how do you price them? Rarity/demand/condition etc.
4. What is the rarest item you have for sale in the store? And the most expensive?
5. What is the most insane thing you have ever had traded in?
6. What kind of games do you usually not accept? And, what do you really wish someone would trade in?
7. How do you decide what to display, and how do you display it? As a budding collector I'd like some thought on this.
8. What are your biggest concerns regarding the store?

digitpress.com stuff:
1. How, when and WHY did it all start?
2. What does the future hold for the site?
3. When's the next edition of the Collector's Guide coming out? And, will there be more PAL content?
4. Any juicy controversies we need to be aware of? :D
5. Can Kitsune keep up the flow of craziness in the Finds thread or will he eventually have assimilated every pop culture trinket known to man?
6. What are your favorite thread and/or subforum?

Game related stuff:
1. As a PAL person I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Commodore systems, which were extremely popular over here (Specifically C64, Amiga, CD32).
2. What are your top 5 game systems of all time? And possibly bottom 5?
3. Games: Loose, boxed, or sealed?
4. Thoughts on the whole game grading shebang?
5. The is the greatest game you've NEVER played?
6. What do your personal collections consist of? What are your favorite pieces?
7. Console vs. PC gaming.
8. Collecting PAL games in the US. Do people even do that?
9. So... Bio Force Ape, eh?

Other stuff:
1. The Videogame History Museum. Now that it's funded, what will the future hold?
2. Do any of you have pets? Tamagotchis and Furbys don't count.
3. You all drink beer on the *cast. Is that your drink of choice or would you rather be drinking something else? Frankie looks more like an umbrella-and-sparklers-drink kinda guy.
4. Also, what kind of beer ARE you drinking?

So... get to it!

...Not that there's anything wrong with that!

Not sure if this question will ever be addressed on the podcast, but since I'm being personally called out on it, YES, I'm totally a girl-drink-drunk, but those typically require mixing/blending which isn't as convenient as cracking open a bottle to start the next drink.

And, don't let the visual of a beer bottle fool you - I believe I was drinking delicious Woodchuck Amber Ciders on the first podcast and (due to my calorie restrictive diet) terrible terrible disgusting MGD 64 calorie Lemonades on the 2nd ... I got my $6 worth of buzz from those, but NEVER again.

Oh you know, those little (generally static) "cards" (Though they are not physical cards anymore.) with a background image or pattern and then the title of the segment written on them, usually in a themed font, sometimes perhaps with a different graphic or font for each segment that's used each episode.

Some of the fundraiser section should be excised. I think some of the comments could easily be construed as ridiculing people who donated to the museum. It's safe to say I've never been part of a fundraiser in which that took place. Your event was a success, you are deserving of congratulations... stop using it as an opportunity to stick it to your enemies. If your final product is as good as it sounds like it's going to be, you have no time for that.

Wow, if there's any of that there I missed it.

But if you do feel that way, I'd suggest addressing that concern directly with Joe, John and/or Sean (whichever one of them said whatever struck you that way) as I'm pretty sure they're a bit busy to be paying attention to this thread at the moment.

While I can't speak for any of them, I don't personally believe that there was any intent to ridicule anybody and that if it comes across that way it was in fact a matter of being misconstrued.

Just to be clear I'm talking about comments about "people who are well off" that "didn't want to put up too much" and "a handful of people who didn't come through". If we're talking about people who "didn't want to put up too much" then what they're saying is that (some) *donors* didn't contribute enough.

And no, I'm not going to approach the Digital Press royal throne on this one. If I happen to see Joe I will certainly mention it. If they're too busy to pay attention to their own publicity that's another issue.

Jeff, you and I were part of a discussion where this was addressed DURING the fundraiser. That conversation brought a ring of people around to comment and speculate (there are even photos of this in one of the NAVA galleries) which is why it seemed like a good conversation to share with the world at large. In that group of a dozen or so, everyone seemed genuinely interested, concerned, and full of speculation.

No harm was meant by re-addressing that conversation, and I apologize if anyone took it personally. If it wasn't patently obvious, we are extremely thankful for everything we've received, large or small.

I enjoyed the first show but the RSS feed doesn't have any episodes in it. Can you guys fix that?

Jeff, you and I were part of a discussion where this was addressed DURING the fundraiser. That conversation brought a ring of people around to comment and speculate (there are even photos of this in one of the NAVA galleries) which is why it seemed like a good conversation to share with the world at large. In that group of a dozen or so, everyone seemed genuinely interested, concerned, and full of speculation.

OK, and I believe my portion of that conversation consisted of "it'll be fine, most of the people who haven't donated (including me) will do so closer to the deadline". And apparently that is what ultimately happened. And yes I too said it was silly that people would want a breakdown of where the money was going item by item, and that has not changed.

What has changed is the fundraiser was a success. Is it necessary to go back into the "2000 people clicked the like button" thing?

Less explicitly, during that casual NAVA conversation amongst friends, I agreed most of the anti-fundraiser noise was coming from the negative vbender banana convention that never likes anything. It's one thing to slag people that are (potentially, but not really) slowing things down in a semi-private conversation among, like, five people. It's another to dwell on it in promotional materials for the museum.

So yes, as your photographic evidence confirms (?), there was indeed a brief conversation at a NAVA meeting about how a number of unnamed people curiously aren't on board with the whole museum thing. And again, I questioned if it was a case of people truly not being on board, or delaying a credit card purchase as long as possible (which pretty much any prudent adult tends to do).

What I don't get as why that would continue to be an issue after the finish line has been crossed. No good can come from it.

Yeah, the vBulletin forum software is bugged in regard to RSS feeds with podcasts. They say you get what you pay for, but the price of vBulletin says podcast enclosures should work!

On topic: we will have a working RSS feed for both the audio and video versions before too long, likely just two weeks or so. We will use different software to handle it though called ListGarden.

Awesome. Not so much about the bugginess of vBulletin, but awesome that you've got a handle on it.

So, what would you like your (overdue at this point) credit to read as in all future productions?

Your choice. Be creative.

A credit title in the podcast, eh? Something creative you say, hmm? How about "Technical Daemon" as a reference to the computer term for something working in the background (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Daemon_%28computing%29#Terminology) taking care of tasks others don't want to take care of or can't handle?

Daemon, yeah, I know that guy "Mailer Daemon" ... he always tells me when my emails don't go through, which is a right kind thing for him to do.

Is it on itunes?

Sorry, not yet.

We'll make it a point as of episode 4 to get them all up on iTunes.

Holy crap it's the Digital Press Podcast Episode 4!

In this episode we discuss and examine some interesting game console controllers from the history books, we delve into a poignant listener question about the fate and possible future of Mega Man Legends 3 and we get some great hands-on time with the Sifteo modular portable game console ... block, thingy. It's really cool.

This episode also features a VERY special closing segment where we discuss a major gripe that we all have with Batman Arkham City. I PROMISE this segment is worth the price of admission, especially for those who like Batman or have alternately ever wanted to punch us in the face/hit us with things.

So stay tuned till the end, where we ask the question ... is this the END of the Digital Press Podcast crew? Tune in next week to find out!

Please note, due to popular demand - this episode contains no exposed knees, calves, thighs or other appendages below the waistline.

I posted an apology to the podcast team in OT. I didn't post it here because the original comments were made in that forum.
