It's difficult to imagine The Shining being any more terrifying than its original release, but Duke Nukem (http://www.joystiq.com/game/duke-nukem-3d) has never cared much about impossible odds (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/13/metareview-duke-nukem-forever/), and it's taken on the challenge like a champ. Film fanatic and analyst Rob Ager has compiled a video dissecting the spatial anomalies in The Shining's Overlook Hotel, as discovered through a Duke Nukem 3D mod attempting to recreate the building. Ager describes the impossible hallways, windows, apartments and stairways littering the Overlook that lend Kubrick's movie a subconsciously eerie, something's not quite right vibe.

Ager's detailed analysis borders on crazed obsession, but it provides thrilling insight into a classic film -- we just think he should take a vacation after this one. After all, all work and no play...http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif (http://www.joystiq.com)Duke Nukem finally figures out what's wrong in The Shining's Overlook Hotel (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/24/duke-nukem-finally-figures-out-whats-wrong-in-the-shinings-ove/) originally appeared on Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com) on Sun, 24 Jul 2011 18:30:00 EST. Wow.

Knowing that they largely filmed The Shining on location, I had never given a 2nd thought to the possible cinematic trickery that Kubrick might have used ... though I guess where these things are concerned it almost always happens.

Awesome stuff. A great great watch for cinemaphiles!

That's by far the best video I've seen in quite some time, truly fascinating stuff, even more so considering that Kubrick did it intentionally. Now I'll probably end up watching The Shinning during my days off because of this.

Videos like these give me trivia to mention during subsequent re-watches. Awesome.

And I REALLY WANT THE CARPET THAT'S IN THE HALLWAYS.

The Shining is almost perfect. One of the best scenes Kubrick ever filmed...

Mr. Grady, you were the caretaker here... (http://youtu.be/4Tul5bY12y0)

Watch the 2 1/2 minute shot with no cutaway, Grady's back oddly turned towards the camera the whole time, the sudden change in tone of the conversation, Grady's unblinking eyes. So much going on in this scene...I could talk about it for hours. One of my all time favorites.

Damn, that was fascinating. Yet more insight into Kubrick's masterful framing and direction. Notice also his obsession with symmetry, yet another device he uses to control the viewer's perception of each scene. BTW, is this Shining-themed Duke mod available anywhere? Man, would I love to blast my way through the Overlook Hotel!

Not sure where you can get the level but perhaps this video can explain more about the actual level itself.

Call me crazy but I always found DN3D to be a very creepy and dare I say scary game, which I think in large part was due to the excellent lighting in 3D Realms Build engine. It always felt unnerving when trying to play this as a kid and I don't think much has changed. Humour aside, DN3D was far creepier than Doom and Doom 2 methinks.

Fuck yeah.

I know he's gone on record several times as to "why" he dislikes Kubrick's vision of his book, but it's always boggled my mind that King practically disowned the film in favor of his dreadfully PG, un-tense, un-scary, un-creepy and tragically booooooooring TV mini-series with Tim "Wings" Daly.

That was an amazing and fascinating watch. It's crazy how much detail Kubrick put int the sets by constructing so many doorways into nothing, just for the sense of confusion/eeriness in the viewer.
