View Full Version : I bid $400 on Little Samson...

So I bid $400 on the sealed brand new Little Samson currently up on ebay and yeah....I did it knowing fully well that there was no way in hell I would actually win it....but on a whim I just felt like raising the price.
But I thought, what the hell....let's get the party started already and jack up the price to $400 already. I mean, we all know that sucker is going to sell for thousands of dollars. But at least I could feel like an ebay champ if only for a little while.
I do this quite often, especially with items I know will sell for outrageous amounts. I can already hear the cries of a lot of you guys. Well, let me ease your fanboyish hearts and minds. It doesn't really hurt or do any harm, since the outcome is inevitable and widely known by everyone, namely, that the particular item will sell for an absurd amount. So my small bid is merely a means to an ineluctable end.
It's fairly amusing to see yourself among the bidders for an item you have no intention of purchasing, especially for rare items. I get to be an ebay champ.
Anyway, anyone else indulge in the same past time?
:)

No.
I don't bid just for fun. I bid to win.
If I'm not in it to win a certain auction, then I leave it be. It's pretty jacked up to purposely spike a game's price. You say it's inevitable, but let the people bidding do that. One more reason I'm glad I'm out of the rat race, so to speak. And another reason why I don't bother with sealed games, lol

I guess it is all fun and games until you actually win an item you didn't intend to, realizing that you overpaid.
An unlikely scenario, but still possible if you misread the ad, etc.

Ironically I once saw it at a rental and passed it up because it "didn't look interesting." Hindsight's a bitch, ain't it?

Wow, way to be an asshole.
It's people like you that artificially inflate the value of an item.
While I do not agree with the "pastime" of bidding on auctions you have no intention of winning, it clearly does no harm here. In fact, its likely that none of the bids up to the point of 20 seconds before auction end have any impact whatsoever. For high profile items such as this, the winners of the auction place their bids in the last few seconds. Everyone else is just wasting their time.
People who proxy bid earlier do not bid the market value. If they planned to, they would just use sniping software or even manually snipe. Snipers bid to win, not to get a deal. You won't get a deal on something like this.

I have bid on things that I "knew" that I wasn't going to win but I have never bid more than I would want to pay for the item.

I don’t know if I can agree with that. I remember early in my Ebay career before I know what sniping was I bid on a game that went for $40~$50 and I put a bid of $80 on it I didn’t think it would go for more than $60 but long story short it ended at $81 because of me.
After that the game started going for $80+ the game was Earthbound, so sorry to everyone that wanted to get that game at $40 I fucked it up on Ebay.
The last part was a joke but the first part is true.

You have to remember, not all sealed games are worth jack. Tails Adventure for Game Gear comes to mind. The most I've seen it for is $150. Got mine for $125 here and only because nobody had a regular open box copy for sale anywhere. I will sell it only to someone who has a good condition open box copy to give me in return.
The stupidest thing to jack up the price of sealed would be any game for a Commodore system. You can get sealed games for that for like $10 because there were so many. Some idiot from Australia is trying to sell a loose copy of Ms. Pac-Man for Commodore 64 for $80 yet auctions end at $2-$3 all the time and I got my brand new copy for $10.
If you ever do get a game you didn't mean to, best solution is just use credit card or paypal Bill Me Later and make payments on it. Bill Me Later sends the seller their money right away and just bills you $35 a month with no interest. Since there is no interest, it's better than a credit card.

Theres a few other buyers who always outbid me EVERY DAMN TIME I bid on something (like something is worth 20 bucks last second they will put a bid in of like $100 to make sure they get it), so I try to jack the price up on them as much as possible even if its something I dont want, as long as they are bidding on it. In some instances, I end up buying stuff at a price I dont want to pay or if its an item I dont want Ill buy it and re-offer it to the last bidder! I am an "Ebay Dick"

I have a list of all peoples usernames who get in my way, from before they masked it. You just stay up to date with their feedback count and you'll know exactly who it is....or you can just 'search by bidder'
....and dont worry, its not video game stuff Im bidding on, but import DVDs usually.

It's the same copy.
It was returned to the seller with damage to the cellophane, so the original seller relisted it noting the damage. Having received sealed games from this seller, I have to say that his packaging job was rather poor. I'm not surprised that the game arrived damaged.

The difference is, only the auctions that have bids throughout the auction time are the ones that end with an inflated price. I've yet to see an auction that didn't have bids until the last few hours end at a price I thought was ridiculously high for what was in the auction. All those bids create a bidding war, whereas the people sniping are usually trying to get a good deal.

Although I don't understand your motivations for bidding on items you're not going to win (see your user name on a list?), I don't think there's anything wrong as long as you pay for the item if you happen to win it. If you end up sending the seller an email saying "I didn't intend on winning this item, so I cannot pay you," it ends up creating a big mess with the seller who has to cancel the transaction and relist the item, potentially costing them money if the item doesn't sell for as much the second time around.

If you bid on an item and lose the auction, you can always find out who the winning bidder is. It's a work-around to get past that whole hiding of bidder IDs. Of course, you only see the winning bidder though, not everyone in between.
I also find myself losing to some of the same guys week over week, but I occasionally beat them too and that makes me happy.

Yeah, go to advanced searches, by bidder. Then enter your own username and check the "show completed listings" box. Any auction you bid on in the last 30 days will appear and show the winning bidder.
Only works if your bid registers. If you snipe and the price gets so high that your snipe never registers, you won't see who won.
whereas the people sniping are usually trying to get a good deal.
Speaking as a sniper, I bid to win at the lowest price possible, but I still bid to win. I don't bid to "get a deal". If I am sniping something, I am there to win. I set my snipe appropriately, usually high market value, or sometimes a ridiculous amount if I simply must have it. It is rare that I don't win an item I snipe.

This is why eBay's system needs fixing.... Yahoo Japan, on the other hand, is almost perfect in that if someone enters a high bid in the last minute, the auction gets extended 5 minutes, up to a limit. That way, people who want to bid the highest bid, win. As in a regular auction. Not like a game of Wild Gunman as eBay is.

I always thought ebay should do this. Extend the time by 5 minutes, then 4 minutes (if needed), etc., etc., until it goes to just one minute(like a final call) and then it is over.
Or, just extend the time by one minute every time someone bids in the final minute. It would be like a real-life auction that way.

You wonder why people get angry over this? You're screwing over collectors who truly want the games they're bidding for. Sometimes forcing them to bid higher than they wanted for a title they're after. One thing is sniping for a product you are desperate to get, another is making a game over someone elses stress. Although Ebay may be fun, it's not a game to some people, you're playing with people's emotions and possible collections.

I understand this, but it had nothing to do with games, nor would I do it to any game collectors, it had to do with a few people involving dvds who would purposely outbid people because they didnt like them. Therefore I took it into my own hands to try and pay them back the easiest way I could. It seems stupid and Ill admit that it is. Regardless, I dont use ebay anymore and I have not for a long time, I was just stating that at one point in time I had done this to a few persons who I feel very well deserved it.

All those bids create a bidding war, whereas the people sniping are usually trying to get a good deal.
I snipe and that's it. The last 10 seconds(five or less if I'm on my own computer) I'll bid as high as I want to pay. I just think it's stupid when you look for a game and there are bids on it a few days before the auction ends and it's $30-40. Not sure if it's the sellers alternate account or people starting a bidding war with three days left.
To the op. That was a pretty dick move and I agree with Kitsune. You're an asshole. Little Samson might end at an outrageous amount, but there's always the possibility that your bid may end it at a price higher than what it would have ended at if it starts a bidding war.
