How about for all 3 of the systems you have on your list.

It is my professional opinion that you should only collect 2 different types of cartridges. No more, no less. Once you have your choices narrowed down, let us know and we will tell you exactlly what cartridges to buy.

Really, what kind of question is that? We don't know what games you like to play. Buy stuff you'll have fun with.

You should only collect 8-track cartridges. Pooh on CDs, DVD-audio, Elcasette, Edison cylinders and those cardboard records you used to get on the back of cereal boxes. 8-tracks are where it's at.

Unless you're going for genres, I agree with the above. 2, with an occasional third to buy for is pretty good. I focus on the Turbo Grafx and the Genesis for now, with the occasional buy for my pre-NES systems.

I take a different approach. I buy what is available. Yard sales, flea markets, I buy everything I see that is a good price. Then I either trade stuff I don't want or just keep it... either way, you're not always going to come across specifically what you want. You will nearly always come across something, though, so pick up what you can and use it to your advantage.

My philosophy is the same as chadtower's. I don't try to complete any specific collections, I work on a bit of everything at once. If I happen to complete a collection in the meantime then that's great. :)

I find that when I pick up those cartridge things everyone is always talking about, they make my snes more fun than when I play it without a cartridge. :duh:

Why would you ask anyone what YOU should buy man, how old are you?

Some collectors rise from the grave on weekends and shamble through the fleas gibbering "Must. Complete. NES. Collection." Or SNES. Or Genesis. Etc.

I applaud the obsessiveness of you platform completists.

I will never complete a system collection because I don't like sports games, I'm picky about platform games, and I'm suspicious of RPGs. I am fond of blowing stuff up, however. So I collect 2-D shooters ("shmups") and mech games and vehicle shooter sims and whatnot. And just plain wacky games, too.

If you have the time, the money, and the obsessive personality, then by all means essay a complete system collection. Hell, that might be why you were drawn to this site in the first place. But even if you want to go that route and just buy up every cart in sight for your chosen systems, I'd suggest that you get at least a couple of games in a genre you enjoy. So what do you like to play? In your first post you asked what RPGs are good for SNES. There's are threads debating the top 50 RPGs, http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1557 ,
the top 50 SNES games, http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1160 ,
and the top 50 Genesis games, http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1565

Those would be good places to look for ideas. If you want to get teh RARE RARE games, then you can look in your Digital Press Collector's Guide and hunt down the carts with the high R numbers.

I'd suggest collecting for whatever system you grew up with.

For me, my first system was an NES.

Maybe you should collect more SEGA carts, like SMS, Genesis, 32X, GG, etc.

I think if you're starting from zero and looking for a system to collect that has great games that can often be found complete and won't cost too much...you can't beat the genesis.

Like the Intellivision before it, the game's packaging design alone makes them more likely to be found complete. There are tons of unique and interesting games, and they are still plentiful and cheap. The used game stores around me have structured pricing for NES, SNES, Saturn, etc....but for some reason, all Genny titles are $3.99 or less. I've got Toe Jam & Earl, Pirates Gold, Dune, Herzog Zwei and more for next to nothing and almost always complete. Even the ones I find in thrifts are more often than not complete.

I just hit 500 on the Genesis and almost all are complete...good luck hunting!

I suggest the Fairchild Channel F and the RCA Studio II. Life doesn't get more fun than the games on those 2 machines. "Tennis" on the Studio II is better than sex if I do say so myself.

Don't collect for NES or SNES. They suck. You'll never enjoy those two systems. While you're at it, don't buy any Gameboy stuff either. Just take any of the items you find for the above systems, and immediately mail them to me for incineration. I will be sure they get destroyed as quickly as possible.

Games in particular you should beware of (and mail to me RIGHT AWAY)....

-Stadium Events (there is a MUCH better game called World Class Track Meet, I'll be happy to "swap" them for you)
-NWC carts (gold or grey, doesn't matter...they're ALL dangerous)
-Prototypes (they ruin your system, and are UGLY)
-Mega Man games (especially the SNES ones)
-ANY RPGs. They're all long and boring anyways.

That is a good start. Just remember--I am the ONLY one who has access to proper facilities for their destruction. Idaho deals with 90% of the Navy's nuclear waste, so you KNOW we have the methods to keep dangerous materials such as these stored away from the unsuspecting public for the rest of eternity.

@dobie - I am sure that the average person would be intelligent enough to see the false validity of your statement, but i just wanted to point out that your sig, "-Dobie NES, SNES, & Gameboy Collector", really doesnt help your cause.

VroomfunkelI like my method better:
1) Type 2) Post 3) See 8 spelling errors 4) Edit and Re-type 5) Re-post 6) Later regret what was typed in the heat of the moment 7) Check back and see 17 angry posts to what I has posted 8) Apologize and Post 9) See 8 spelling errors 10) Rinse and repeat

Oh, and to answer LOTR's question: I suggest you begin collecting comic books or Yu-Gi-Oh cards as you apparently seem to be looking for investment advice rather than videogame advice. No one can tell you what games you enjoy, so you must be fishing for info on what games are collectible/worth the most. After all, most of your posts thus far have been "how much is this" or "what's this worth"?

Post a question - any question - on game play, videogame lore, or something other than value-related q's and folks might take you a weeeeee bit more seriously.

sorry there, but you didn't understand my post!!!!!!!!

i know that there are 4 listed, that's why i made the 3 double and then 5, if i had thought it were 5 i would have said 1 2 3 3 3, understand?

i made it like it was the first lesson in mathematics at school thats why i didn't want to stop with 4, perhaps i should have made the list until 10 so everyone understands it ;)

pffft! Shooting Gallery beats the piss out of "Tennis." I agree about the Fairchild collecting though. It will provide you with many fun hours of enjoyment. Have a party with your friends and serve squeeze cheese, they will no longer think of you as a square, but a functional member of society.

Thanks Yashiro...made me laugh considerably!

I agree that collecting specifically for 2 or 3 systems is a good idea, although of course it's always worth keeping an eye out for cheap/rare games on other consoles. You're asking to be shot by somebody here if you come back and say: "Picked up some nice Genesis games at a garage sale yesterday. Passed up a $5 sealed Chrono Trigger for the SNES cuz it wouldn't go well with my Genesis collection."

Personally, I am just collecting SNES stuff right now (although I also have a Gamecube). I grew up with the SNES, so I already know most of the games I like and dislike, plus what kinds of games go for what kinds of prices. My advice would be to either collect for 2 or 3 consoles or just collect Sega/Atari/Nintendo etc.

Try the nursing home. They're easier to find there.
