Ok, it’s not so much a problem as it is an annoyance. When I insert the game cartridge into my console the game plays; however when I push down and “load” the cartridge I get a blue screen. What’s causing this? The system works, just not correctly which is kind of annoying. Any suggestions?

If you bought used, the 72-pin connector was probably replaced.

I did buy used with a new 72 pin connector. Is this a problem that consoles with replaced pin connectors have, or can I fix it?

It's not technically a "problem". They're built to be like that. They're not meant to be pressed down. That prevents them from wearing out.

thanks for the help Beta. I thought locking the cartridge down helped protect the game from freezing if the console got knocked by accident.

Can second this, I repair/modify for a local video game shop. When replacing these connectors I disable the game tray (can be reversed) so it cannot be pressed down. I also include a small document explaining why the tray has been disabled.

Originally they were designed to be pressed down, Nintendo has videos showing this all over the place.

Now with the replacement ones I can't really say but I've had good luck NOT pushing it down with most of my games. Last night I played Metal Gear and without pushing it down it worked fine. TMNT3 on the other hand would reset just after character select unless it was pushed down.

Probably need to clean TMNT3 though.

With some copies of Super Mario/Duck Hunt I don't need to push them down to get them playing on an unaltered system, the boards seem to be a bit thicker than other games. All other games I need to push down.

That being said, if I ever come across someone selling a system with a new connector I'll avoid it entirely. From what I've read a lot of new connectors tend to break down after a year or two of use.

That's strange because for me, at least on eBay, selling a system that is already rebuilt has been a major selling point.

That's because every hard-core gamer geek already has a mountain of NES'. I sell a NES with rare, htf games, no luck. Sell it with Mario 1 2 and 3, get more money. Those newbs want a 'new' system.
