Yeah, so I got the Game Gear bug right now and while I have played many of the Platformers and puzzle games, I never got a chance really to play any of the RPG's. I just got Dragon Crystal and am about to fire it up now. Does anyone have any suggestions for some really well put together ones for the system? I would assume there were a couple at least as Sega was notorious at the time for some solid RPG's. Thanx' in advance.

There's the Shining Force game for this system which was later re-released on the Sega CD, that's about all I can think of.

Defenders of Oasis is a pretty excellent RPG. Just don't make the mistake of thinking it has anything to do with Beyond Oasis. Crystal Warriors is also an excellent strategy-RPG. And that's pretty much it.

Can't beat Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya.

There are a few more JP only ones which are good, two of which have been fan translated (Sylvan Tale and Lunar: Walking School).
Royal Stone is a SRPG, so it's sort of playable.

Couldn't tell you if its any good off hand, but:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantasy_Star_Gaiden

Japanese only but there are translation patches out for it. Just not going to find them in cart form unless you buy the EverDrive for the GameGear which will also let you play SMS games on your GameGear. Not to sound like a bloody advertisement...

I want to say there are a few other Japanese only GameGear titles with patches out there that'd make such a purchase worth while but ONLY if you like playing on the original hardware. Personally I have a difficult time playing anything on that screen with a mere hour of battery life. Even back in 1996.

More or less complete list of GameGear games:

Is Dragon Crystal even an RPG?
I had that game when I was a kid, but I never got very far in it. There's no save feature of any kind and it just seems to go on endlessly.

Dragon Crystal is a dungeon-crawler RPG, yes. It's more of a Roguelike than anything though.

As for other RPGs, pretty much the only other one in English on a cart is Defenders of Oasis (which, yes, has nothing to do with Beyond Oasis, unfortunately).

The three strategy games are better. I like Crystal Warriors a lot. It's a somewhat simple game, but quite good. The two Shining Force games are good stuff too, though both are better in their enhanced Sega CD release form.

But yeah, there were a bunch more in Japan, some of which have translation patches now... there are translations now for Lunar Walking School, Phantasy Star Gaiden, and Sylvan Tale. There's also a partial translation for Magic Knight Rayearth.

Beyond that though, the rest of the Japan-only RPGs aren't translated, and there are others --there are the original Sega RPGs Eternal Legend and Moldorian: Hikari to Yami no Kyoudai, and ports of four Madou Monogatari first person dungeon crawlers (with Arle also of Puyo Puyo fame), as well as Last Bible and Last Bible Special from Atlus.

For strategy games only released in Japan, none have translations unfortunately. There are Royal Stone, which gameplay-wise is pretty much a sequel to Crystal Warriors (the story is different though), Daisenryaku G, Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict (this one isn't in Shining Force CD either, it released after that title), Godzilla (yeah, it's a strategy game), and Head Buster (strategy game with mechs fighting). Oh, the second Rayearth game is sort of a strategy game, it's a raising sim.

I really, really want translations of Royal Stone and Shining Force Gaiden Final Conflict... :( Translations of those other games would be cool too (all of the untranslated RPGs, Head Buster, etc.), but those two I want to play in English the most.

You can try Golden Axe: Axe Battler

These are the two best English-language RPGs for the GG (along w/ Shining Force Sword of Hajya, but I prefer playing it on the Sega CD if only b/c it adds the second game in the series). I'd also recommend the Madou Monogatari games if you can stand playing RPGs in Japanese. They're easy to play even without knowing the language and there's still fun to be had (honestly, the storyline in them doesn't add a whole lot).

Oh yeah, there is that one, one of the system's only action-RPGs (it's Zelda 2 style, essentially, like how the SMS Golden Axe game was Zelda 1 style)... it's too bad that it's not that good.

There's been a translation patch for Final Conflict out for a few years now. Also Head Buster.

That's cool, too bad Royal Stone doesn't have one too though. :(

I had no idea. Is it any good?

Golden Axe Warrior is a Zelda 1 clone, specifically. Golden Axe for SMS is a port of the arcade game, and a vastly inferior one to the Genesis version not worth playing. Golden Axe Warrior is a decent game though, yes. The US version is really rare, but the EU version works fine in a US SMS and is more common (as usual for the SMS). Even the import isn't cheap, though. But yeah, it's a fine game, and much better than the not-so-good Zelda 2 clone Ax Battler game on GG... it's not particularly original, but decently done.

There's also Crystal Warriors, which is an SRPG similar to Shining Force. It's semi-rare, but due to it being relatively unknown, is pretty cheap.

Dragon Crystal was also released on the Master System, so no real reason to play it on Game Gear (unless you don't have a SMS or absolutely have to play it on the go.)

defenders of oasis is a great game, but be warned the save battery is notorious for dying on you halfway throug the gam.

I 100% agree, but it was still kinda fun

Gonna give Defenders of Oasis another up.
