Has anyone ever encountered these cash registers at a gas station or convenience store before? I swear, they make the ring noise from Sonic the Hedgehog every time the clerk scans an item. And it's not just a noise that sounds similar...it IS the ring noise taken straight from the games. The first time I heard it was at a gas station near my house. I went inside to buy a soda, and I suddenly heard the ring noise. I glanced around thinking I would see someone nearby playing a Sonic game on a portable gaming system, but than I noticed the clerk scan an item and the noise went off again. That's when it hit me that it was coming from the register.

Too much Sega, not enough fresh air?
Actually I know what you're talking about. My wife pointed it out to me a few weeks ago.

They probably used some public domain stock sound so they wouldn't have to pay royalties.

And I'm sure you've heard this scream before - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zf8aBFTVNEU

Speaking of game noises in odd locations...
There is a device the employees at Target use to scan items to see what needs to be ordered that makes that "chime" noise from Super Mario World right before the music starts on the title screen. The first time I heard it I was like "Who is playing Super Mario World?" I've pointed it out to my girlfriend (who works there and agrees) and a couple co-workers who love that game that get a chuckle every time.

first time i heard it like a year ago i was like "wtf.... you know how much trouble i would get in playing around with the cash register if i worked here" i would play the theme song on a radio or something from Mystery Cave Zone

*grabs Gatorade and noise goes off*
now if only they had the sound for when you ended a zone after passing the sign or jumping on the storage device with all your critter friends letting them free.
Then I would be tempted to pick up a gas station job at night just for that. haha

Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one hearing the Sonic ring when I check out a certain gas stations. A good friend of mine actually has it as his messaging tone on his phone which makes it even more apparent how old I'm starting to get lol
Oh, I'll be damned, post 1000, sweet :)

... So it wasn't my imagination. There's a gas station near my post office that has the ring sound whenever something's scanned.
AND, my local 99 Cent Only store... uses Sonic's jump sound whenever they cancel an item or adjust the quantity.
Weird.

I've been hearing it for years. A few times that same register would also play a sound effect from Lemmings.

Grocery store chain around here called Thrifty Foods does that. Drives me nuts.

The register I work with every day has the Sonic ring collect chime, sometimes if it's a large order with one item multiple times, I'll hit it fast to sound like Sonic's running collecting rings.
I... hate when registers and such use that sound. Years of Sonic games have conditioned me to expect that ring sound equals Sonic The Hedgehog, and when the sound is there without anything to do with Sonic, it creates an upsetting mental frustration. And you know they chose that sound on purpose.

Yeah, I first noticed it last year in the gas stations in New Orleans. Then I started hearing it this year in Midwest, where I live now, mainly at gas stations. I think it's awesome, but it's a little weird because I always feel like I'm the only person in the vicinity who knows that it's the coin chime from Sonic the Hedgehog, and certain the only person who would cares, so it's not worth mentioning to the uninitiated.
I do wonder why it's always gas stations and convenience stores and not places like GameStop that use the chime though.

I've heard the ring noise on various Asian TV shows too. It's so distracting.
Sometimes I wonder if Sega just got it from a stock library somewhere.

I noticed the Sonic ring noise at a gas station out here in California.. and that's the only good thing about having to stop at a gas station these days.

There in a bunch of shell gas stations here in California...
I first came across it about a ago but thought it was just my mind playin tricks on me!!!

What you don't like stale candy, overpriced gas and jerky that everyone touches because they don't use the tongs? What kinda Californian are you? Lol!!!
I never go into gas stations or convenience stores, so I guess I'm missing out... but that's pretty cool. Another one I've noticed is the attract mode in Stacker makes some sounds that sound very close to the dying sound on Donkey Kong.

I suppose I don't mind if someone touches my jerky, as long as their hands are clean.

I've heard the chicken noise from Harvest Moon (FOMT I think) on TV before. The UK channel E4 has oddly used it in some their adverts.

Yep, I noticed about 2 years ago that the small convenience store near where I grew up (MA) uses the Sonic ring chime on their registers.

I came to this thread to comment on Target. I've noticed this in both of my local Target stores, but to me it sounds exactly like the sound on N and N+ when you get a gold coin.

It's the "come help me" sound when they call the manager or whatever. I asked last time I heard it.

E4 used some music from Ocarina of Time in one of their adverts too. I forget which one now, but they seem to have form here..

Gas station near my friends house has the Sonic ring, and the first time I heard it I swore the employee was playing it behind the counter.

Yes.. I've heard it many many times and many gas stations.
Another story about the Sonic rings.. in the 90's I used to go to Japan a lot and would walk around Akihabara and would also hear the sonic "ring" sound often and wonder where the heck it was coming from since I was out on the streets. Although I guess it would make sense that you would hear it there.. I believe it came from some toy vending machine is what I eventually found out.

The Valero Gas Station near where I live has the SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Coin Sound too. I wonder if Sega ever had any rights too this sound? mmmm.... Someone call Sega of America!

My girlfriend confirmed that. It's called a "PDT" and the sound will come over it. The device is used for other purposes too!

I work at target and they also make the sound when you get a yoshi coin.

I first heard one in a long time on July 9. I made a comment to the cashier "I love that game." He loved it too. Funny to see just a little bit of retrogaming in the mainstream in that manner.

I'm starting to hear game music everywhere now! Last night I was flicking through the channels and on one they had a show where B&B owners swap businesses. One woman was very OCD about hygiene and whilst she was talking I swear they were playing the Ghostly Galaxy theme from SMGalaxy!
