I hate swap discs, but it may be good for the solder fearful. Also, it may bring the price of good chips down.
I consider swap tricks inelegant, and increase wear and tear on the unit's long term life. Backups should be to extend the life of a collection. Not to extend the life of your games at the expense of the hardware.

I have a set of those Swap Magic discs, and they work just fine. You have to be something of a ninja with a flat object, since you need to "manually" eject the disc tray from the front. It's pretty harmless when you do it properly, but the risk of catastrophic failure is very real if you have a case of butterfingers. Another option is to just replace the cover of your PS2 with a custom fliptop lid cover.
And personally, I'd recommend ordering from The Console Corner. Look for them with Google. That's where I got mine, and they shipped really fast.

With the mod chips (solder or no solder) installed and using the swap discs allows you to play import PS2 games correct? Is that better than buying a Japanesse PS2 or just cheaper? Thanks. 8-)

I went for the slightly costlier option of buying a second, Jap PS2. Luckily I managed to get one for £85. I think it'll look nice sitting atop my PAL machine. Maybe I should get a US system too and pop that on top too? :D

No, that doesn't work. If you could just write a CDR and get the PS2 to boot it, you wouldn't need a boot disc in the first place. Dreamcast lets you do that quite easily.
And yes, Swap Magic works great with imports. I've heard there are a few games that are incompatible, though, so I wouldn't mind finding a list sooner or later. I've been able to run original DVDs, and also CDRs just fine. And frankly, I think it's a lovely alternative to paying a few hundred dollars for a game system you already have, but without the ability to play backups. ;-)
$200-$300: JPS2, no US games, no US network adapter, no backups
$20: Swap Magic, US games, US network adapter, backups
That was an easy decision for me. Heh.

I did not burn it to disk yet, but i assume it should be a dvd disk. Actually that file just had some stuff on how to mod a ps2... i guess checking my old crap would be worth it. And I now know its not real then LOL
