Whats the fair going rate for a top loading Neo Geo CD these days? And which region is the better choice to get, US or JPN?

I was selling CIB ones for $100 plus shipping and with a few games. Those were Japanese models. I was, of course, buying them for a fair bit less than that (I've found them for under $10, CIB, believe it or not! They are around $60-$100 or more in mainline retro game shops), but I had the advantage of having access to Japanese pawn shops away from areas that tourists go. I think I was probably giving a better deal than a lot of other people were.

I saw a few on eBay today for over $300 with no games. That is a complete rip-off, IMO. I think $150 with a few common games thrown in would be fair. That is based on a $100 or so buy price from a mainline retro game shop in Tokyo (CIB), plus a mark-up to cover expenses and some profit, while still staying a fair bit lower than eBay prices. Shipping wouldn't necessarily be included.

I would imagine a US NGCD would be at least in the $200-300 range.

The US and JP consoles are basically the same. They are both region-free with a twist; most games have a built in region detection in the disc. For example, if you have the Japanese version of Samurai Shodown, it will display the Japanese name in the Japanese console with a Japanese menu is default, but in a US console, it will have the English name and English menu. Some games have other differences (blood in Japanese games, sweat in US games).

Since a lot of games have a language option in the menu (that also changes blood, etc.), it really doesn't matter if you have a JP or US console. If you really want, region modding a console is pretty easy.

FYI, the front-loading model is just slightly more expensive, but it is also heavier which adds to the cost even more if it needs to be shipped. IMO, it is a lot cooler looking, though!

The local game store where I live sells one for $199.98, IDK if it's JP or US.
